AV Linux,
Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I did a fresh install of MX23. Sorry, I did not make that clear.
I had previously been running MX19 for the past 5 years, with thankfully very little intervention, after the initial teething trouble.
Not familiar with PipeWire...

Can you copy and paste the output of these terminal commands for me?

Code: Select all

apt list pipewire-setup-mx

Code: Select all

pactl info

Thank you, that looks good!

So everything is in place as far as PipeWire replacing PulseAudio, I don't use XFCE4 nor do I use onboard soundcard headphone out so I'm not 100% sure what to advise at this point.. My main concern was that PipeWire wasn't fully installed but your term output looks good..

What soundcard are you wanting the headphone output from?

AV Linux,
Many thanks for the quick reply.

There is onboard sound on the motherboard, which I switched off in bios when I first switched from Win7. That is still switched off.
There is sound from the graphics card to the TV which I use as a monitor via HDMI. I have got this working but the 24" TV sounds terrible and, more importantly, it would disturb my wife!
I would like to use my headphones plugged into the Creative Xfi sound card as I have always done since switching to Linux 5 years ago.

@rob2cv Give the following a try:

In a terminal, run

Code: Select all

alsamixer

Once it is loaded on screen, then:
F6 and select a sound card
F5 to show all areas

look for Headphones and what the sound level is ( the two numbers on each side of the <> )
Use right / left arrow keys to navigate to the Headphones module and then +- to raise or lower the values. If the values are 0<>0 then raise them up to around 80<>80

and then test your headphones. You may have to go higher than 80, and you may have to choose a different sound card, depending upon where your headphones are plugged into.

OK,
The Creative sound card is selected. F5 for all.
I can't see an option for headphones...

@CharlesV
I have tried plugging the headphones in and back out again. I can hear them crackle as I do this. I think that the headphones are still working at least!
I can't spend anymore time on this just now.
I'll get back to it tomorrow, if there are more suggestions.

only thing I can think of is to try selecting a different sound card in the alsamixer .. I have never seen card that had headphones, but not the headphone setup in alsamixer.

I'm going to jump in here with this. Assuming that audio worked fine with MX 19, I think that you should use MX Package Installer (MXPI) to install the AntiX 4.19 kernel, reboot and at the Grub screen select Advanced Options and then mark the 4.19 kernel as the boot choice for this session. Does sound now work?
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.
