Laptop freezing on battery power

#1 Post by oliverjames »

Hello,
I have just replaced the battery on my Dell 7480 laptop. I haven't run this machine on battery power for a while due to the state of the battery but having replaced it with a new one, I started on battery power to charge-cycle a few times to condition the device. Booting into MX the system froze after a few minutes. I rebooted into Mint and the same thing happened.

I'm sending this request from EasyOS. This OS does not cause the laptop to freeze when on battery power.

Please can you help me resolve this issue?

Thank you for the attempt, but that is really not much use. Either run your laptop on ac long enough to post its QSI or boot into a live session via your USB install drive and provide the QSI from there.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I think that since this problem started with the new battery, you need to take it to a quality repair shop and have them test it.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Thank you for your reply. The problem pre-dates the new battery. I first encountered it with Mint, on AC power, when I thought that an updated Kernel has solved the issue, which had never happened running MX. It was only today that I had this issue when booting into MX on battery power.

Here for further info is the QSI generated under Mint:

Re: Laptop freezing on battery power

If you boot up on AC, get your system all up etc. Load a Conky that shows battery and then unplug AC so your running on just the battery...

Does your battery indicator show it is discharging too rapidly?

Does the machine still freeze?
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

From here:

Apparently there is a design flaw with one of the ram slots in that laptop. The solution is to open the case and move the ram stick from the occupied slot to the empty slot or if there are two ram sticks, remove the right hand stick.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Thank you for noticing that; embarrassing as I'd posted 3 comments about the freezing issue on that Dell forum - not nearly as reactive as yours! So I've now swapped the 16 Gb ram card to the unoccupied port and will see how that goes.

I was thinking of adding another 16 Gb ram card but hesitated as these days I rarely do any computing tasks that use anything near to 16 Gb ram. Now I'm further convinced as such a mod would appear to be counterproductive.

No, the Conky panel gave no indication of rapid discharge, and the machine did still freeze. I've now switched the ram card as per the adjacent post and am monitoring to see the result.
