Should I try regressing back to 6.12 using Live USB Kernel-update

#1 Post by calinb »

I've been working on a live persistent boot with a bunch of ham radio software installed. I'd planned to distribute it to friends. I ran into this problem after I updated to the 6.13 kernel (AHS) I have Radeon graphics but it sounds like this could be a problem for my friends with Nvidia graphics. Should I simply try regressing back to 6.12 using Live USB Kernel-updater or maybe I can just go back to a save point from before my last remastering.

Thanks!

HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

You'd probably fare better by temporarily returning to the nouveau driver before making a snapshot, so that the system is ready for all type of graphic hardware...also reinstall any wi-fi drivers you might have uninstalled for the same sort of reason.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

The snapshot maker asks if nvidia is going to be used, you can say yes or no, and when yes a line is added. <-- I doubt it does this when not on an nvidia machine, sorry, misunderstood you there.

Simply remove xorg=nvidia from the boot line which will then boot not using nvidia.

I am going to split the topic.

@calinb Your topic is here. Next time, do not tack on to another's topic, thanks.

Thanks, Stevo. I might go one step further and start over with a fresh live MX-23 image but not update the kernel this time. It takes a few hours to install all the ham radio software but starting fresh might result in less support needed later by my friends using my customized live MX system. They all have newer AHS compatible hardware but maybe it's worth avoiding AHS too. I still don't sufficiently understand the root cause of the problem to feel comfortable in attempting to recover from it.
Eadwine Rose wrote: Mon Mar 24, 2025 3:27 am The snapshot maker asks if nvidia is going to be used, you can say yes or no, and when yes a line is added.

Sure--I can limit all my posts to, essentially, replies that specifically address the OP rather than replies that might otherwise still be on-topic and informative, and perhaps helpful to me or others.

However, with this thread now forked, my post is now nearly entirely lacking context. As a former mod of several years on a very popular web forum and also after many years of participation here, I suddenly don't get this forum's management style.

It shouldn't be too much of an issue to temporarily revert to nouveau, since your laptop, like mine, is a Dell Optimus AMD/Nvidia setup, and QSI shows it using the integrated AMD APU.

Code: Select all

Machine:
  Type: Laptop System: Dell product: Dell G15 5515 v: 1.4.0 serial: <superuser required> Chassis:
    type: 10 v: 1.4.0 serial: <superuser required>
  Mobo: Dell model: 00VT1V v: A04 serial: <superuser required> UEFI: Dell v: 1.4.0
    date: 07/20/2021
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Well.. you'll have to get used to it. Whether you were a mod on a very popular forum is irrelevant. This is how things are done here; our house, our way of handling things.

Then provide your own context. Provide enough independent context that the thread can stand on its own. Adding links to relevant threads is fine. If you don't have enough context to make a new, independent thread about a problem, come back when you do.

If you're an old timer online, then you remember when netiquette was a thing people understood and you remember how bad an idea it is to tack "me too" onto someone else's thread. If ten users have a problem with a widget, it's fine for there to be ten threads about fixing it. Threads are cheap these days and the search function works. This forum is far too mature and too broad to try to add value by consolidating everyone's Liquorix problems into a single uberthread called "Re: kernel problems - if you have kernel problems, put it here". MX development, and even Debian development if you can believe it, moves a lot faster than some search engine indexes do.

Folks here neither like nor want ancient threads, years old and dozens of pages long, still rambling on long after the original author has grown bored and moved onto greener pastures. To that end, this forum and its community are oriented towards providing support, not a historical record.

Hmmm...Debian 13 Trixie and thus MX 25 Standard will be using the LTS 6.12 kernel.
