Thanks so much for your prompt reply, fehlix! You got me thinking and provided the hint I needed to solve the problem. Asking "how the live usb was made" made me think.

I made the faulty live usb using Live USB Maker on an outdated MX17 system, which was idle and available at the time. When I just now made another live usb using an up-to-date MX21 system, the live usb functioned as expected.

Furthermore, I had installed a bunch of software on my faulty memory stick system (all of "Andy's Ham Radio Linux" and all the MX apt-get upgrades, which would have teken me several hours to re-install, but I was able to recover all those persistent changes using the following Live USB Maker features (checking the following check boxes):

Clone a Mounted Live System (the old system that would not retain settings)

and

Update (only update and existing live usb) (the new system lacking all my persistent modifications and softwares)

Save the original boot directory when updating a live-usb was unchecked, of course.

By updating my new and fully functional live usb with the persistent changes I had made to the old live usb, I easily fixed the problem. The antiX / MX Live toolset is very impressive and the best of all the Live Linux operating systems!

Thanks again!
