updated firefox and now it makes a gear icon on taskbar :(

#1 Post by signaloss »

hello friends,

i'm on mx-21 and i had to update firefox manually because firefox was nagging me to update by march 14...i followed another post here to update and it has installed into /opt area but everytime i click the firefox icon on the taskbar, it creates another gear icon on the taskbar instead of underlining the firefox icon itself like it used to. any ideas how to fix this? thanks in advance!

Not sure why you didnt just update it in your regular updates via MX Update notifier ?

I have updated several of my MX21 machines using the regular MX repos and FireFox is just fine. latest 136.0.1
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

Yes, when you see the notification from FF that updates are available, just sit tight and soon after, the updates will appear in the normal updates that come to MX. That will update the FF that is already installed in MX.

I'm guessing that since the panel/taskbar FF launcher points to the default preinstalled FF, when you run the /opt FF you are going to get a different icon on the panel.

ah simple try right click on the panel "Firefox gear-icon" 2nd item down is "Edit Launcher"
when it opens right smack middle is the icon it using - double click to open the plethora of icon choices,
might open/max window to full size to see'm all but the original Foxy icon is to be found here.

trick is to double click this "Your Choice of many icon"
and make sure it does reflect when click Ok it results back to that "Edit Launcher Icon" and now click save and bobzerUncle.
simple.

The MX Firefox package has update notification turned off, so that begs the question of exactly what you have installed, and how you did so.

i actually followed this post:

viewtopic.php?p=809999#p809999

i already got a firefox launcher. when i click that launcher, it now creates a new gear icon on the taskbar and underlines it instead of underlining the firefox icon. so i have o remember to click on that underlined gear icon to get to my firefox. if i forgot and clicked on the firefox icon, it would open another new gear icon and underline it. and so on

thanks for help and sorry for delay.

MX 21 still gets updates, unlike MX 19, so will automatically get updated to the latest Firefox from the MX repository. So, it seems the problem is self-inflicted, and there's a Yiddish word for that: farpotshket. It describes something that's broken only because someone tried to fix it. :frown:

Maybe you have a bad repository. Let's see what Firefox you have available:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && apt policy firefox
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

updating manually with instructions on the post above i have 128.0.7esr

as an aside i would like to remove these *.in repositorys? because its quite slow i feel.
