Won't boot. does the MX boot logo gif, then stays on a flashing caret

#1 Post by kmiles »

I'm on 23.5(x64) and my laptop just stopped booting to GUI. After the MX logo, there's only a flashing caret. I think it happened after updating and shutting down, but I don't remember what was in the update. I also could not login with my user acc, only the root acc.

What I tried:
- tried the boot repair from the MX-live-usb but it did not help
- I set grub to be skipped since laptop only has MX. I got it back by booting to a live-usb and changing the etc/default/grub.
- in the advance options I can only select (2) kernels, the other stuff in there was gone(like failsafe). changing kernels or using systemd did not work.

I do not yet know how to take the output of inxi then put it in a file, so I just took a picture for now. Below is the QSI.

Image

how should I troubleshoot?

I forgot that the QSI on the live-usb is essentially the same, will edit the post.
Is the inxi pic not needed? There are parts there that say "state: down". which will not be reflected on the live-usb QSI

I meant you to run it on the problem system because you said that you could access the root account there.

@j2mcgreg Ah, I meant that I can access the the root acc in the tty1(alt+f1), so it's still not booted. which is why I took a picture of the inxi -Fxz of the screen instead.
I will try getting the output of inxi to a file in the tty1.

If your Kingston SSD is the same age as your computer, that could be the reason for the boot failure as the initialization code string may now be on a bad block (even though you QSI says that the drive passed SMART). I suggest that you log into your root account and create a new user for daily use. Once that is done, restart the computer and try to log in to the new account. If this is successful, you can use the root account to transfer your data from the old user. After you have determined that the new account is operating properly, you can delete the old user.

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Re: Won't boot. does the MX boot logo gif, then stays on a flashing caret

#10 Post by kmiles »

I forgot to mention that I don't reach the login screen. the order of the things it displays is MX grub, MX boot gif logo, then the flashing caret. So even if I make a new user with root, I would still be unable to login with that through GUI, only through the tty1. though I did make a new regular user.

I have already backed up the files that's in my original home directory(which I can't log into in tty1) to an external drive so I'm fine on that.
should I try getting the output of dmesg?
