KDE SDDM has issues sometimes with login Splash screen - dreaded blank login screen

#1 Post by LinuxSpring1 »

Recently I had a strange issue with the Login splash screen during boot. I have a splash theme defined in MX Boot Options utility. My laptop was in sleep mode and my battery had drained completely. So I plugged it into the power and tried to boot it up. Got the dreaded blank screen after the GRUB menu. Waited for a few minutes and then rebooted my laptop with SystemRescueCD. Ran a full FSCK on all the partitions. Checked the log files in the directory /var/log of MX Linux. Namely boot.log, dmesg, syslog, kern.log. Nothing out of ordinary stood there. Rebooted the laptop back into MX Linux. Got the Grub menu of the MX Linux. Selected the first option and it showed me the blank screen once again. Hmmm. This did not look good. CTRL+ALT +F[1-5] keys were not working, so I could not get into a tty console and try to troubleshoot. CTRL+ALT+DEL key combination was also not working. So physically powered down the laptop and then rebooted again.

This time on the GRUB menu, I selected the option, "e". In the boot menu removed the splash option and put nosplash instead of it. Pressed the F10 key, waited for 30 seconds and huzza the KDE Login screen appeared. Was dreading a reinstall. Logged in, did some sanity checks. Checked the output of the command cat /proc/cmdline and it showed me that yes I have booted with nosplash option. Rebooted and this time allowed the boot to go through. No changing of the GRUB entries. Nothing. And it booted fine. It was a great sigh of relief.

So my questions are as follows
1) Why does the Splash screen/theme sometimes cause the login screen to fail in KDE. I have checked in the forums and there have been some instances of this reported earlier too.
2) Is there a mechanism via which this issue can be traced via logs? Either SDDM logs of boot logs or dmesg or some other logs? If yes then please share the details?

Hats off to MX Boot Options utility. Great piece of software.

I am using MX Linux 23 with KDE 5, and SDDM as the display manager. Wayland is being used.

Re: KDE SDDM has issues sometimes with login Splash screen - dreaded blank login screen

Any suggestions or pointers on this?

1) Why does the Splash screen/theme sometimes cause the login screen to fail in KDE. I have checked in the forums and there have been some instances of this reported earlier too.
2) Is there a mechanism via which this issue can be traced via logs? Either SDDM logs of boot logs or dmesg or some other logs? If yes then please share the details?

We have told you many times before to provide an unedited QSI, and to stop the XXXing out.

I have issued you an official warning.

Please provide the full QSI, NOT edited.

If I drain my phones battery completely, it won't turn on until it reaches a minimum of 5% battery.

Let the laptop charge up a bit before you dive into troubleshooting.

Can you replicate this issue using the x11 display server?
or
Can you replicate this issue booting to system-d?
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

@LinuxSpring1
Either post your complete, unedited QSI or be prepared to accept a lot of guesswork in the responses (if any) you receive.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

My response isn't meant as a warning per se. It's just a statement of reality. Any question posted any place where the knowable facts aren't available, must be responded to in a rhetorical manner.
