Audio devices fail

#1 Post by caspar »

Some time ago my computer started to fail:
When I turn on the computer, no audio devices are detected.
The utility "Sound card selection" sees sound cards (both Azalia and HDMI) but does not output sound when testing.
The pavucontrol mixer does not show sound cards in the configuration.

If I reboot the computer, the audio devices appear and work normally.
I did not find any difference in QSI after boot on and after reboot.

QSI after boot:

I think that some service is not starting, but I don't know which one.
I would like, if I can't eliminate this failure, then at least not reboot the computer, but restart one service.

According to this site:
https://theretroweb.com/harddrives/384
your Seagate ST3250310AS HDD is seventeen years old, which exceeds its replace by date by ten years. It needs to be replaced.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I believe you can use the following to kill and restart the service. Note, it could be pulseaudio or pipewire, so test one, and then test the other. On my machines, if you kill pulseaudio it will reestart by itself - but that is on a working system, so ?

The nice way:

Code: Select all

pulseaudio --kill; pulseaudio --start
The sure way:

Code: Select all

pkill pulseaudio; pulseaudio --start
And for pipewire:

Code: Select all

pkill pipewire; pkill pipewire-pulse; pkill wireplumber; pipewire-start

Thank you. I'll try your's methods next boot.

CharlesV, unfortunately your advice did not give a positive result. Only reboot helps. Sad, but true.

Next I think I would try updating to a liquorix kernel. I personally would try a 6.5.x kernel as a test. You can just roll it back if it doesnt help, but worth a try.

The difference is between a cold start and a warm reboot?
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Yes. Audio devices work only after warm reboot

I'll try it tomorrow.

The problem was solved when I replaced the video card.
(The sound was output through the HDMI connector on the video card.)
