MEDION MD 96370/WIM 2170: internal WLAN hard blocked

#1 Post by MadMax »

I've got my hands on an old MEDION MD 96370/WIM 2170 laptop from 2007 and I'm having trouble bringing up the internal wlan adaptor. rfkill reports it being "hard blocked". Supposedly there should be some button on the laptop to enable wlan, but I can't find anything. There's also nothing on the Fn row and I also tried Fn+F1-12 even if they weren't labeled (there's only labels until F5).

In the BIOS is an option to toggle between "Disabled" and "Last State" and "Last State" is selected. I have no access to its old Windows installation, since the HDD died long ago.

In antiX (which I'll probably use for this laptop) I got a WLAN stick running which also doesn't seem to work in MX (enabling Wi-Fi in the taskbar doesn't do anything, maybe it tries to enable wlan0), but my main concern is about the internal wlan.

Any ideas? Apart from that problem the laptop seems to run smoothly.

rfkill displaying the hard block in phy0.

EDIT:
After some trial and error I found out the status LEDs right of the power buttons apparently are some kind of touch buttons. But unfortunately the WLAN button doesn't seem to do anything. The others respond by getting slightly lighter for a second. I guess I'm out of luck here?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

It looks like when running windows FN+F7 or FN+F8 will 'toggle WiFi on or off'.

It sounds like 'last state' may be is holding that 'off' ... you might try resetting the bios?
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

I might try that, since the laptop probably needs a new cmos battery anyway. Disassembling unfortunately is no small feat, since the board needs to come out completely and the display has to be removed too to access the battery, looked that up already.

Fn+F7/8 do nothing, tried that already.
