Desktop resets randomly

#1 Post by ekeimaja »

At this week this weird behavior started after I installed the latest package updates. Every day my desktop resets itself randomly 1-3 times per day so that all open applications shut down, background image resets to default and master volume goes to 50%. I can use the system normally after that, but every time I have logged out and back in just in case.

Does anybody else had this same problem?

That's sort of an older Liquorix kernel; could you try one of the more recent ones in MXPI? Or maybe you could create another user and see if they get the same kablooies.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

I will try if kernel upgrade fixes this.

Now I upgraded kernel to 6.12, but VBox does not like it. I had version 7.0 of VBox installed from MXPI so I removed it and manually installed the 7.1, but it did not help.

Code: Select all

VirtualBox can't enable the AMD-V extension. Please disable the KVM kernel extension, recompile your kernel and reboot (VERR_SVM_IN_USE).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
ConsoleWrap
Interface:
IConsole {6ac83d89-6ee7-4e33-8ae6-b257b2e81be8}
If I try to install dkms or ext-pack packages, apt wants to downgrade VBox back to version 7.0.

We don't have a Liquorix 7.0.xxx kernel available in MXPI, so where did you get it?
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

I imagine that number was about Virtualbox, it's at 7.0.x in the repos and 7.1.x in the latest release from Oracle.

Exactly. I wrote the previous message too ambiguously. My bad. Edited it now better.

Now the original problem has been solved, but I still wish I get my virtual machines back working.

Nice that you got it solved. It would be really swell if you described here what caused it and how you solved it, so that the info would be around and searchable, in the case someone else has a similar problem down the road :happy:

You would need to add the "ahs" section to the MX repo, using MX Repo Manager, and install virtualbox 7.0.22 from ahs to get one that will work with 6.12 kernels. The virtualbox installer in MXPI should work for that once ahs is enabled and the repositories updated. Usually "ahs" kernels, like the 6.7 you were running before, are happier with ahs drivers, but you were able to get by without them on 6.7. You could disable ahs after updating VBox.
