So sad..

#1 Post by |-|ans »

..being my favorite distribution for a few years now, had to move to Pop!OS to get my former Razer laptop properly running was SO happy noticing my new one (Blade 17 adv w/Gen 12 12800 cpu and RTX 3060 graphics) did run perfectly with the NVidia drivers but.. the latest update messed it up completely. Now mirroring displays with the 50" television is not possible anymore. And as soon as I install, at a fresh install of the regular or the AHS version, the NVidia drivers the system hangs at the following (and proposed) reboot.. very disappointing but.. once again I feel forced to move again to the, imho, inferior Pop!OS distribution.. any chance this will be resolved in the near future?

And instead of just asking for help, you just installed something else? Because we cannot help you fix things if the things are no longer there.

Not yet, but moving on because I do not always have or want to take the time to keep on trying to get something up and running. In this case it felt a bit worse to me because: on my previous Razer I noticed MX Linux was not able to use the NVidia card (1660ti) as the primary one causing the system running somewhat crippled. To make use of that card I had to switch to a different distribution which fully supported that card.

The current 17" advanced model offers the option to disable the internal graphics and installing an earlier mx23 version worked like a charm out of the box that way. The latest update however messed it all up and so I tried a fresh install of the latest (regular and AHS) versions. Both resulting in a mess after the message video drivers had changed and the easiest way to fix it was to restart after installation. Well, all that restarting gave me was a huge blinking cursor on the top left of the screen.

So all I want to say here that there is an issue with the latest update which might be helpful to others and for now I am moving on to a working distribution. Nevertheless this is just my gaming laptop, on my office laptop still using MX Linux, although I am a bit worried migrating from 19.4 soon, but I expect less trouble with just internal graphics on that one..

My final findings for now: enabling optimus in the bios instead of using the discrete card only makes the system start. The only thing is it cripples the graphics so having a somewhat advanced card seems pretty useless in this case.

If you still want help from forum helpers, please post your Quick system info, which you can find in the app menu of MX Linux.
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

There are ways to use the "optimus" discrete cards on demand or full-time in Linux, but without any information as to what you have tried... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Thank you for your offerings, but the thing is: with the integrated graphics disabled (I knew from the past that might conflict / cripple the system -and- this laptop offers the option in the BIOS) I could easily install MX Linux but the latest updates messed up things so I decided to do a fresh install. Both versions (standard and AHS XFCE) struggled, especially with the second monitor (HDMI).

For now, instead of going the trial and error route for days or even weeks I decided to install a different distribution: not exactly my cup of tea but.. as with my prior Razer, which also did not run well using MX Linux, it was a piece of cake to have it up and running.

I might give it another try in the future with an upcoming release but for now I'll stick to a well running gaming laptop.. without fearing the next updates coming in.

Thanks again for the offers to help me out, but for me the issue is closed for now.

What? No one noticed the passive aggressivity?

The problem is simple..... nvidia drivers suck and older drivers suck even more. He can get newer drivers from the repos on PopOS and either using the "run" packages on MX conflicted with something or he did not feel confident enough to go that route. Assuming he means the recent 535 problems.

For whatever reason he chose the path of least resistance and is annoyed at MX for not being it.
