Then I tried to fix the install:

I installed the wifi driver for my dongle on this kernel and it works. Okay, I'm declaring solved.

I'm happy to have remembered about those manual dkms installs, and to have learned a little about the manual dkms commands. "man dkms" was really dense and unhelpful in those regards. Thanks, @kmathern

Another groovy mystery solved, Scoobs!
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing
