I recently upgraded a Proxmox VE server to the latest, version 8, by running through the official upgrade instructions. In the last half of last year I'd done the same thing. That server started out years ago on version 6, and all i really needed to do was edit some repos in /etc/apt, do a dist-upgrade, and reboot. The 6-to-7 process was identical to the 7-to-8 process and both were notably painless.j2mcgreg wrote: Sat Jan 18, 2025 1:26 pm I submit that the influencers (or fan boys to give them their proper name) are looking for a panacea that doesn't exist
I can't say that this feature isn't nice to have, but I also appreciate that a Debian virtualization appliance is a very different ball of wax compared to a desktop Linux distro. Meanwhile I have an MX-21 machine I've never gotten around to updating because I know what that will involve and I've never saved up the spoons for it.
If I thought my opinions were important, I can imagine exploiting this comparison for clicks and making a video or six about it. Easy upgrades do exist, and they exist in Debian, but they are not without their risks.
