MX 23.5/XFCE 4.20 Thunar crashing

#1 Post by hebelwirkung »

Did the latest round of upgrades which brought XFCE 4.20. No problems except for one: thunar fails to open. This is what I get:

$ thunar
(thunar:4634): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: 10:11:22.169: invalid cast from 'GFileIcon' to 'GThemedIcon'
(thunar:4634): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: 10:11:22.169: g_themed_icon_get_names: assertion 'G_IS_THEMED_ICON (icon)' failed
Segmentation fault

I've seen a few reports of this online, no solutions though as far as I can tell. So it's not just me. While thunar refuses to start, I can use PCManFM or Nautilus, but thunar is the file manager of choice, so if there already is a way to resolve this issue I'd be grateful for details. Btw I'm running MX 23 in a VirtualBox, no idea if that has anything to do with it.

Here's my QSI:

It's also working fine on my three machines. The AHS version is installed on the two HPs and the regular version is on the Acer Aspire V5.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Shot in the dark. What icon theme are you using?

I'm using Flat-Remix-GTK-Teal-Dark which is also my theme, but I've already tried a number of alternatives, including the Greybird MX themes with various icon sets - nothing so far has made any difference.

Was thinking the same - looks like Thunar could not find an icon and decided to dump (vulgo, the error has not been treated).

That's strange. Mine's just the latest standard kernel as far as I know, but - okay, I'm a technical moron, but I wonder whether it's kernel-related. This seg fault message I get from the terminal seems to relate to icons though whichever ones I use makes no difference.

I haven't had any crashes but I did notice Xfce still has not fixed their thunar toolbar icon issue.

If you enable all the toolbar icons, open thunar and change icon themes you will see that some of the toolbar icons use a placeholder icon. I have noticed this since about 4.16 or 4.18 with the "list view" icon and it happens with the new "change active view type" icon. It might also happen with other custom actions toolbar icons. I don't know if not finding an icon can cause it to crash.

testing was done with adwaita and papirus icon sets. I did not try with icon sets in home folder, just the usual provided icon sets.

I suppose it could be some other gtk issue, like some css override or maybe something similar, but if your virtualbox install is pretty stock, I wouldn't think that would be a problem.

Xfce put out a Thunar point release, 4.20.1, last week,
I just uploaded it to the MX Test repo so you can see if that fixes things.
And if you haven't yet tried this, delete the ~/.config/Thunar folder and reboot. The reboot is because Thunar leaves a process going after you have closed it so the config files aren't reloaded until you reboot.
