Trying to create a Hostpo - no DNS working

#1 Post by ~FLOW~ »

Greetings my excellent friends,
I'm trying to create a quick Hotspot on my laptop and it's driving me insane.
In KDE you cand create it via gui Networks with the designeted button "Hotspot".
The problem is that I don't have internet in that hotspot. I cand connect to it, ping 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 and even 142.250.72.197 , but no links do not work. So I presume the problem is the DNS ?
BTW I booted up with Linux Mint and it works flawlessly.
Another thing is that I don't understand how hotspots work, who is the DHCP server ? I'm trying to create a temporarily and quick hotspot with a separate netwok. No permanent settings needed.

I tried soooo many methods, even with 3 AI clients but I get the sam results. Even got scripts with 300 lines ... with options menu, backing up, restoring files ..
The thing is that a newbie when it comes to iptables or ip forwarding so I'm afraid I'll mess up my os.
So I want to start from scretch with you :)
What do you suggest ?
Thank you
MX-23.4 / KDE Plasma 5.27
Kernel: 6.XX

With all requests, as per forum rules (which, if you haven't, please read), please share your full Quick System Info, do not edit.
If need be, you can do this using the LiveUSB, thanks.

You are using an Ethernet to USB adaptor rather than either of the onboard devices, why? Are they non-functional? In order to create a hot spot, you are going to need a working WiFi card.

yes, the onboard card is only 100 Mb, the adaptor is gigabit.
With the same setup in LM woks fine - no config needed - so it must be something from this os

In that case, I'd suspect a conflict between eth0 and your USB card. Access your bios and see if it's possible to disable the onboard card.

I disable it, but it's the same, "no internet" just ping to IPs

Regardless of desktop environment I always use this:
https://github.com/lakinduakash/linux-wifi-hotspot

It's easy to install and easy to configure. Maybe firewall can be a problem, but I don't think so. It's just as easy as creating a hotspot in Windows. It says you can also share Wifi to Wifi using the same adapter, something that most desktop environments can't do.

You write you had good luck with Linux Mint. My experience with the built-in hotspot functionality in Cinnamon hasn't been great.
Note to self and others: SysVinit is a good option. However if you run into problems try with systemd first. This applies to AppImages, Flatpaks, GitHub packages and even some Debian packages.
