Do anyone has an experience with a floppy?

What is up with floppy disks on MX Linux?
I have tested several floppy disks, that work fine on Windows, but I can't get them work properly on MX Linux.
The problem is that I can only read them. I can't write them.
When I attempt to write I got always "Acces denied". Changing owner and privileges does'n make a difference.

Forgot to mention that when I got "Acces denied" with an USB drive, I can change privileges and then I can write the usb drive.
With a floppy disk it woun't work.

Do anyone of you an experience ?

Floppy diskettes used to have a little tab in the corner on the back of them that could be slid into a read-only position to prevent anyone from overwriting them. Assuming you can run "mount" and the floppy diskette is mounted in Linux and does not have the "ro" flag set, consider double-checking if the disks themselves don't have the tab locked. You could also confirm if the disk is writable by attempting to write something to it in, say, Windows or FreeDOS.

I am pretty sure my floppy disk is write enabled. The whole is covered. My Windows machine can write it freely while MX Linux says "Access denied"
I can only read it on my MX Linux.

I can only read it on my MX Linux.
Verify the disk is mounted rw with mount, that you have correct ownership of the mountpoint, and that the data you want to write is less than the amount of free space available on the disk.

I used to work at a college computer lab where users would sometimes come to the service desk and ask for help. One day a girl came up to me with a floppy disk and complained she could not save her work on it. "Floppies are only 1.44 megs, so you may not have enough free space on it," I told her.

She frowned. "But it's only got TWO files on it!"

That's hilarious :biggrin:

I suppose the young people can't even imagine how little space 1.44 M is nowadays compared to the old days, they might quickly mistake that for 1.44 G.


On topic, can you post the output of "lsblk" and "mount" and while in the root directory of the mountpoint "df -h ." and "ls -la" so we can see how the floppy is mounted, its free space and its directories' permissions.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Maybe, try writing as 'root' or using sudo, MS, I believe runs as the main/root user, (& I think I remember needing to do that, many years ago, from Linux).

I recall from my Windows days many years ago that occasionally a floppy would read and write on one particular machine and not on another. It was not an OS issue but had to do with the head and track alighnment of a particular drive.

Have you tried the floppy on another machine running Windows?

Well, a bit late to the party, but I saw this post and decided to unearth my USB floppy drive.

As I had a Mageia installation running I tested it on that. I could easily read a proprietary OKI driver floppy from way back when. I couldn't write to it as both of the potential openings at the top were open and with no shutters in place making the disk read only.

I had a previously unused floppy disk where those openings were set to read/write. With Mageia I wrote a couple of files to it.

I started an MXLinux laptop and took the floppy drive to it.

It happily read both of the disks I had been playing with.

When I tried writing another file to the floppy (1.3MB free, 81.6KB test file, I got the message:

Access Denied
Could not write to /media/bbfuller/disk/<filename here>

Looks like you're not alone.
