WIFI speed incredibly slow, just fine on windows.

#1 Post by indieisgoininsane »

Hello. Recently, and for the first time since Ive had MX for 2 years, my WiFi download speed has slowed incredibly down, while originally at 20Mbps, it fell to 500kbps max. The quick system info will be below, but I am using a Broadcom BCM4313 802.11bgn adapter, with the "brcmsmac", "brcmutil", and "e1000e" drivers enabled, and the "wl" and "b43" drivers blocked. I have unblocked the blocked drivers, but it didn't do anything. And, lovely enough, the WiFi works completely fine on windows, with my download speed being from 19-21Mbps. I am on a Dell Latitude E6420, working on the latest edition of MX, completely updated.

Here is the quick system info:
Network:
Device-1: Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network vendor: Dell driver: e1000e v: kernel port: 3080
bus-ID: 00:19.0 chip-ID: 8086:1502 class-ID: 0200
IF: eth0 state: down mac: <filter>
Device-2: Broadcom BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter vendor: Dell Inspiron M5010 /

bus-ID: 02:00.0 chip-ID: 14e4:4727 class-ID: 0280

And the speed test:
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 0.59 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed......................................................................................................
Upload: 5.71 Mbit/s

With all help requests, as per forum rules (which, if you haven't, please read), please share your full Quick System Info, do not edit.
If need be, you can do this using the LiveUSB, thanks.

Sometimes with B/G/N cards the driver will default to N which in theory is the fastest protocol, but in practice is so susceptible to interference, which forces multiple resends by the router, that it ends up being the slowest. You can, however, force the WiFi card to use G by right clicking on the wireless icon in the panel --> select Edit Connections --> double click on your SSID -- use the selection box to the right of Band to switch from Automatic to B/G --> save and exit.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Device-2: Broadcom BCM4313 802.11bgn ...
... driver: bcma-pci-bridge ...
... chip-ID: 14e4:4727

In fact no such driver. That only indicates either there are conflicting drivers or none of them was loaded.

The correct driver is bcma:

Code: Select all

$ cat /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/modules.alias | grep -i 14e4 |grep -i 4727
alias pci:v000014E4d00004727sv*sd*bc*sc*i* bcma
So, using the "MX Network Assistant" unblock and load it, and block others to prevent conflicts.

P.S. Also try enabling brcmsmac, bcma, brcmutil together
(yes you did that before but without the bcma. brcmsmac depends on mac80211, bcma, brcmutil, cfg80211, rfkill, cordic )

As an alternative: Enable wl only, disable all others.

I decided to just disable all other drivers, except the wl driver, and now my speeds are definitely back up to normal, thank you guys :happy:
