Black screen and pointer

Hi

A bit of a linux noob.

I have been enjoying MX for a good few months. I have googled and overcome various anomalies, to get a nice stable and functional platform. Recently I managed to create a larger partition to allow effective hibernation. However....

I now use hibernation between sessions, rather than the sleep mode. Since adopting this method, I have encountered a problem. I have noticed a couple of things happened that made me think it was about time I did a reboot after several hibernations. I cannot remember the various behaviours that urged me to do it. The final straw was Steam CSS refused to launch. So I did a reboot.

Upon startup I am presented, after the usual reboot time, with a black screen and a mouse pointer, it has no use, you can move the mouse, nothing to click on and keyboard entry has no effect. After googling on another device, I used ctrl alt f2, dropping to cli. Login, ran some commands resulting in switching to after installing lightdm in dpkg-reconfigure. When I login subsequently I am presented with a question mark by the clock, which says software renderer. I read that if I switch back to sddm, at the black screen I ctrl, alt, f2 - login and run startx I get the environment I wanted and it all works. However, the other issue being that when I run discover, it shows updates but crashes when I try to install them. It wants to install mesa, breeze and freedesktop, which I feel is the source of my issues. I ran apt-get full-upgrade. It has reduced the list, but I still cannot update mesa , freedesktop and breeze. I have tried to untick them and install one at a time, but the discover crashes and asks to report a bug.

Is there a way I can install mesa, freedesktop and breeze updates from cli? I hope that would address the startx issue.

If your still struggling with this, I would suggest installing a Liquorix kernel to see if that resolves it. The 6.6.x or 6.9.x would be good to try, I have found liquorix kernels to be very helpful at resolving issues and may help this one.

And I would use MX Package Installer to install both the liquprix kernel and to reinstall those mesa and other updates.

This one should've been commented out and enabled temporarily by "MX Package Installer" automatically when installing something from there and then disabled back. Keeping it enabled like that may cause problems or break your system.

Also: should we understand "if you use suspend rather than hibernating (at least to test) and then wake it up, everything's fine"?

Have a test with:

If your still struggling with this, I would suggest installing a Liquorix kernel to see if that resolves it. The 6.6.x or 6.9.x would be good to try, I have found liquorix kernels to be very helpful at resolving issues and may help this one.

And I would use MX Package Installer to install both the liquprix kernel and to reinstall those mesa and other updates.

re: bookworm test , I must have enabled this when I first installed MX after selecting the distro I liked. I may have seen advice to make a change, but being a noob I wouldn't have known it was not advisable. I think I have managed to comment out the test repro.

re:suspend (and hibernation) both suspend and hibernation work exactly as you would expect. I spotted a couple of things not being quite right causing me to reboot and highlighting the nuisance of logging in and out has shown itself, along with the discover nuisance.

re: swappiness, I made any changes only on the guidance I could find online when seeking a functional hibernation solution. I have changed the swappiness back to 15.

Since reboot, I now do not get the Blackscreen startx issue, it is mended. But Discover is still being a winkle.

Glad to hear it's ok now.

That "Possible missing firmware" is ignorable (it's kind of "traditional" :D ) which are in fact just "info" rather than errors. They'll appear whenever initramfs is updated (i.e. whenever you install a new kernel or the default (6.1) one is auto-updated ). In the meantime, those mentioned "missing" ones are in fact not existing even in the most recent firmware tree in the original source.

You can (if you like only) add

to "Kernel Parameters" in "MX Boot Options" and it'll print just "error conditions" rather than all kinds of "warnings" (which's equivalent of 4 by default). (I, too did so).


P.S. "MX Package Installer" is the best one. Afaik Discover is already known to be problematic (in general).
Btw. any time you like (even daily) you can simply update (and even "full-upgrade" : to new point release etc.) with :

I tried to use mx package installer, but unfortunately it throws an error.

You should also install the 6.1 Debian kernel metapackages using MXPI to get automatic security updates, since the -13 version is rather antique now.
