Is there a way to install Kasts on Plasma as a non-Flapak package?

#1 Post by mxethernut »

(If this is the wrong section please move post accordingly)

Is there a way to install Kasts on Plasma as a non-Flapak package? It is by KDE but there is no .deb package available on Debian twelve I think.

The flatpak one seems to freeze my panels, right-click on desktop and latte-dock, hence the whole plasmashell when playing podcasts at times, for me.

Plus it does not respect changes in the color scheme after it was started.

Highlights of changes in 24.02.0:

Kasts has been ported to Qt6 and KDE Frameworks 6.
Quite possible Kasts 24.0+ found in the KDE store has moved on to Plasma 6.

I was able to track down version 23.08.4-2 from Debian. I can't guarantee this will work. https://packages.debian.org/trixie/kasts (link at the bottom)
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

I was never afraid to build from source. Don't know why many don't choose so. It's a nice skill to have and it isn't hard to do.

git clone https://invent.kde.org/multimedia/kasts
cd kasts
mkdir build && cd build
cmake .. -DCMAKE_PREFIX_PATH=/usr
make
sudo make install

I do see a issue that might come up.

Note: When using versions of Kasts built from git-master, it's possible that the database format or the name of downloaded files change from one version to another without the necessary migrations to handle it. If you notice bugs after upgrading to a git-master version, export your feeds, delete ~/.local/share/KDE/kasts and import the feeds again.

Please please please don't suggest that newer users think of trying to install Debian testing packages on a stable MX...

I'm looking at backporting the upstream Kasts 23.08.4, but it's getting tricky. Extra KDE backports are required first, and those need backports in turn, and so on. That "make" above just won't work.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing
