Re: Is there a way to reset nouveau drivers?
its unlikely an external monitor has a direct backlight control that MX can use. Not impossible, but unlikely. there are probably controls built into the monitor. that is what I would use.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

I did go through all the controls I could find on the monitor itself and all it will really let me adjust is brighteness and contrast and "profiles" like warm, cool, normal, user, etc. There are different presets too like standard, theater mode, night mode, etc.dolphin_oracle wrote: ↑Fri Aug 09, 2024 1:17 pm its unlikely an external monitor has a direct backlight control that MX can use. And thank you. If nothing else I'm learning A LOT!! Which is fantastic.

believe to think this has evolved some with MX - when install nouveau drivers are base. When you install any nVidia driver set there usually is a caveat or Follow up
"To restore open source drivers later use:
sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
hope this may help.. Cheers.
there is actually more should also provide
"For recovery help see
https://mxlinux.org/wiki/hardware/nvidi ... l-recovery
if this posts oddly after WIKI / HARDWARE / is in lower case NVIDIA-DRIVER-INSTALL-RECOVERY possibly post filtering is automagically correcting / breaking this url it should be white listed.
It does look funny - but if you "Left Click the link - Right click "Open link in new tab" it all works find otherwise type in lower case possibly even browsing the caps wording in a search should also spider you in to the post.

Re: Is there a way to reset nouveau drivers?
Could uniformity issues be what is messing with my eyes?
I took a break from it for a few days and right away when I tried it I had problems. Also before I took a break from it I tested it with the USB drive installer and noticed problems.
I tried this monitor test and I noticed that uniformity seemed to be quite off with parts of the upper screen being much darker than lower parts. I took a screenshot and also took a picture from my phone to demonstrate. The settings were at 25% and I shut my blinds with the lights off to try to avoid glare.
I also did the same uniformity test on my laptop and I didn't see any issues. I do notice that the angle I look at things changes things a bit but it seems more than that with that monitor.
I have looked at a few articles on uniformity and "dirty screen" but I haven't found any good fixes yet, except clean my screen, which I did try before I took my monitor break.
Is there anything I can do to fix it? I'll of course be researching myself. And I will try to contact support for the monitor too.
Thank you so much again everyone!

Re: Is there a way to reset nouveau drivers?
Very definitely it could be part of the issue. Also you mention the angle.. I know when I work on clients machines in person, I see quite a different visual from my higher end large screens. Most of it is resolution, but some people have their monitors very physically low in comparison to mine - mine being up high, and equal to my head.
All that can play on how your eyes are aligned with the monitor.

Re: Is there a way to reset nouveau drivers?
I tested it on a laptop with Windows 10 and it seemed to bother my eyes. Flux did seem to help a bit. I'm going to let my eyes rest and test again later. The great thing about that test is that I'm using HDMI instead of DVI so that helps to eliminate if it is a problem with the cable.
I did do the uniformity test on there too and it had the same problems.
Regarding angles, I don't notice too much of a different with that monitor but I did notice a little when testing the laptop. I do have the monitor about head height and the laptop is just slightly lower than my head.
Maybe it is time for a new monitor? I'm not sure what else I can do, though I'm going to file a support ticket with ASUS, just grabbed the SN. At least it seems the problem is the monitor so it is getting narrowed down more.
Thank you again for all of this help!! I really appreciate it!

Re: Is there a way to reset nouveau drivers?
I've started trying an old monitor that I had lying around and it seems a lot better but still makes me feel slightly dizzy / off. It is like my eyes have trouble focusing on it.
I visited my friend for a bit and used his laptop, and on my Lubuntu laptop I have no problems. What could be different between the two?
Thankfully I don't have that issue where it felt like the monitor was burning my eyes out of my skull anymore, just a bit dizzy / disoriented. I did stop playing that game a while ago and going back to the nouveau drivers helped a lot. I did reinstall the nvidia drivers but I haven't played the game and probably won't.
ASUS has been a dead end so far with all the hoops they wanted me to jump through.
What else can I try? I do still need to try the USB boot thumbstick with the old monitor, and I could test it on Windows again.
How do I know if it a monitor is beyond repair?
Side question - if I put my wifi driver on my USB boot thumbstick, will that cause any problems? I see the thumbstick is locked in a way where when I tried to move it on there it said there is no more space, but it is a 16 gig drive and the OS is taking up about 2. It asked me if I wanted to do it anyway but I said no because I wasn't sure if it would mess anything up. I was thinking it would be a good idea to test web browsers and such when using the boot medium to see if it messes with my eyes.
Thank you again for all of your help!

Re: Is there a way to reset nouveau drivers?
Just a thought... I am bringing my laptop up to mx23 and have encountered a very heavy change in the screen.. and this may help you as it did me.
Go into MX Tweak - Display tab, and turn DOWN the software brightness. Then turn UP your backlight ( or key for brightness on your laptop). I have mine set for Software Brightness: 67 and Hardware backlight: 90.
What this did for me was to 'darken the text' ( kind of a bold ) and made things easier to read. Still working on the green in the posts here - those are still very light.. but otherwise.. everything looks quite a bit better.
