Upgrading dpkg in AV Linux 21.3 Wildflower

#1 Post by GB71 »

Hi.

I just tried to install Bitwig 5.2 yesterday, and I got:

E: sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

When I told Bitwig support, they told me my dpkg version was too old (1.20.13), and I need at least 1.21.18.
I had no issue installing Bitwig 5.2 on my old Macbook running AV Linux 23.1 Enlightenment, which has dkpg 1.21.22.
AV Linux 21.3 Wildflower says dpkg 1.20.13 is the newest version. Is it possible to upgrade Wildflower dkpg to 1.21.22,
or has it gone as far as it will go in Wildflower 21.3?

I'm still wrapping my head around Enlightment on my old Macbook, so I haven't installed it on my main PC.
I still like working in Wildflower, and would like to continue using it, until I feel more comfortable in Enlightenment.

Thanks.

With all help requests, please share your full Quick System Info, found in the menu under Favorites. Press the Copy for forum button, then click paste in a reply. If need be, you can do this with the LiveUSB, thanks.

Also, next time, post the output as text, not as an image. For searchability.

Hi,

Well AVL-MXE 21 is getting a bit old and to be honest I don't have a running install of it right now to test this but if you open the MX Package Installer (MXPI) and go to the "Debian Backports" tab it is possible (no guarantees) that perhaps there is an updated or newer version of dpkg there..

mx test repo.

lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 - MX-23
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Just be aware that if they want a newer dpkg, that's often not the last little "gotcha" that'll turn up.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Thanks, Stevo. Comment noted, which is why I am learning to use Reaper as a backup to Bitwig.

Ok. I finally braved the upgrade to Enlightenment. I must say, it's very stable, and easy on the CPU for me. I'd say it's more stable than AVL 21.3. I like it! And Bitwig installed with no issue.
It's hard to upgrade when your system is running smooth, but I think I waited long enough for any bugs to be fixed. Cheers, everyone! And thanks for your work, Glenn.

Hi, well that is very nice to hear! I would say 7/10 comments about Enlightenment have been negative. In my experience it is also quite stable and I love the low memory footprint. I'm working on a "10 Things I Hate About Enlightenment!" presentation that will hopefully address some of it's peculiar quirks in a lighthearted way.

I actually quite like Enlightenment. It's just that I like KDE Plasma more, and after using it for many years it's just familiar so doesn't need learning new ways to do the same thing.
