gThumb does not show mp4-videos

#1 Post by Michael_Logies »

I try to switch from Picasa to gThumb (Digikam is already too much for me). I like that GPS-Data are shown on a map. But *.mp4 are not shown, only an empty placeholder for each mp4. I then can open the video with vlc, but I miss a picture of the original mp4 in gThumb. Is there a solution?
Thanks!
Michael

Thank you! I googled and found that the integration of videos in gThumb can only work on the Gnome desktop. But I hope you prove this to be false. ;-)

install gstreamer1.0-gtk3

lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 - MX-23
FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Thanks! After that, the videos ran in gthumb, but the thumbnails were still missing and there was no sound. (Perhaps a reboot would have helped, but I did not do it.)
I then installed ffmpegthumbnailer and ffmpegthumbs and deleted the cache:

Code: Select all

rm -r ~/.cache/thumbnails/*
I did reboot before deleting the cache. Now I have sound and thumbnails for videos in gThumb (and I don`t know exactly what did help). Thumbnails of videos are now available even in Thunar, where they were not before.
In gThumb vertical videos show the correct thumbnail but the video itself is displayed horizontally. When I try to rotate the video, I am told that no appropriate loader is installed. But this seems to be a persisting problem of gThumb: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1398356 ... o-rotation If I open the vertical video from gThumb with vlc, it plays vertically, that`s good enough. Or is there a solution for gThumb? Thanks!

I tested a few other programs, again (Shotwell, Digikam, Darktable) and then used Timeshift to go back to a cleaner installation of my MX. I can confirm, that gstreamer1.0-gtk3 is enough for playing video with sound in gThumb after a reboot and only ffmpegthumbnailer is needed for thumbnails of videos in gThumb and Thunar, after deleting the old Thumbnails-Cache (rm -r ~/.cache/thumbnails/*).
