Uninstall/Reinstall of VLC not working

#1 Post by asher »

My vlc quit working correctly so I uninstalled through MX Package installer

However VLC what still present /usr/bin/vlc

so I
sudo apt uninstall vlc
sudo apt purge vlc

VLC is still there**********************
so I,
sudo rm /usr/bin/vlc

# Clean apt up.
sudo apt autoremove

Reinstall vlc through the MX package installer,

Now that I reinstalled VLC there is NO vlc in the /usr/bin/ directory...

There is no "apt uninstall" command. You can install, reinstall, remove, or purge a package according to "man apt". So I'm guessing that you can't reinstall VLC because the package is still, technically, there. You just manually deleted a file instead of actually evaluating how to remove the package that put it there.

In order for VLC to start clean, you can remove the /home/username/.config/vlc folder. It will create a new one upon the next start.

If it then still gives issues, you open MX Package Installer and you can remove it using that. <-- edit: I see you tried that, and it apparently didn't work

By any chance did it stop playing some videos correctly or crash when using the slider to skip through a video?

If so this might help - viewtopic.php?t=81068
