VLC crashes on moving slider, MX-21.3, since last update

#1 Post by planetree »

I pretty sure this problem started after the last MX-21.3 update, though not saying it was anything to do with it. If I click anywhere on the slider to move the video back or forward, VLC crashes. I don't remember any recent VLC update so I'm presuming something in the last MX-21.3 update doesn't agree with it.

Anyone else find this? Appreciate all suggestions.

As always, troubleshooting vlc and most every other application involves starting it in a terminal, starting playback, inducing the crash, and seeing if any relevant error messages show up there.

Also "apt policy vlc".

It seems that vaapi hardware decoding is causing a crash now on your system.

Can you go into VLC's Preferences-->Input/Codecs and disable the hardware-accelerated decoding too see if that helps? Sometimes that may require restarting VLC after saving the setting change.

Hah! Yes, that works! Thanks very much. I wonder why it suddenly started doing it though. But great that it works now.

Same happening here, as above, disabling hardware decoding fixes it.

Terminal before disabling hardware decoding:

Terminal after disabling hardware decoding, same file used, skips ok now using mouse on the slider or left/right arrow buttons:

Re: VLC crashes on moving slider, MX-21.3, since last update

#8 Post by Stevo »

Both problem machines have Intel Haswell graphics using the modesetting kernel driver--I thought those were supposed to be using the "intel" driver instead.

You can use MX Tweak to switch to the "intel" driver to test. The changes require a reboot.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

I get no picture only sound with mp4 videos after switching to the Intel driver and setting hardware decoding in VLC back to Auto.
I've never changed any display drivers until now that I can remember for any MX version I've used, they just work so I leave them alone.

EDIT: forgot to mention, after the restart when switching to the Intel driver I had to reset my Desktop background as the folder had been changed from what I had it to Pictures, the Style changed to stretched from scaled and the background colour had been changed from black to pale blue.

Glad I found this. The same thing happened to me when I was testing an MP4 for upload to the Okanagan Reader YouTube channel. Disabling hardware acceleration fixed it.
