MX 23.3 XFCE ahs 64 live-usb gets unstable after a relative short runtime

#1 Post by mutli55 »

preword: i am running MX as a live-usb for about 1 year, starting with mx 21.3 which i could get alive for months. a month ago i finally upgraded to 23.3. 9 thenth of the using time i am surfing with firefox, which has an amazing fullscreen, and additionally some work with libreoffice. now with 23.3. i am running every 1-2 day into this error. a restart with all settings and a restore of the bookmarks and other files from the cloud will then take me 20 minutes.

error: after 1-2 days of life thunar suddenly informs me by a popup that he just mounted the media stick. that means the end of that session, no more apps could be started (childprocess ...) and a logout leads to a black screen with a blinking cursor. i can get control with ctrl-alt f1 and root login, but so i am not a linux admin, init 6 to restart is my only knowledge.

Does the behaviour persist if you use a different thumb drive?
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

🙁 would be shameful. i need a couple of days to examine.
i am owning and using only one stick since years. writing a new mx distro (.iso) onto it is a periodic hard fight on my w10 desktop.
(diskpart-select-clean and an additional command if clean throws error and not forget to run etcher as admin)

USB thumb drives aren't nearly as robust as we think they are IE they wear out. If you have been using the same stick continuously for a couple of years or more, then "old age" is the likely culprit.
