In regards to starting or toggling Redshift I give the following.

Redshift (redshift and redshift-gui) will automatically start and run after every log-in when an entry is made in "Session and Startup".
  • When Redshift (redshift-gui) is installed, launch it from the Whisker menu. Then click the Redshift Panel icon to bring up a menu to enable "Autostart" (it is disabled by default.) That will automatically create and enable an entry in "Session and Startup"
  • redshift is the back-end (command line only) of redshift-gui. That will take a few more simple steps to have it start automatically by manually making an entry in "Session and Startup".

When Redshift is installed from the MXPI "Popular Applications" tab, both redshift and redshift-gui will be installed and there will be a Redshift entry in the Whisker Menu to launch it. If redshift only is wanted then go to the MXPI Stable tab and select it there. If redshift-gui is installed from the MXPI Stable tab then it will automatically pull in redshift with it, identical to using the MXPI "Popular Applications" tab to install.

I find it very advantageous to use redshift-gui for several reasons:
  • Redshift appears on the Panel allowing it to be easily disabled/enabled without closing it
  • allows it to be suspended for 0.5, 1, or 2 hours
  • allows it to be autostarted and that can be enabled/disabled (it is disabled by default)
  • allows an information window to appear, specifically:
    status (enabled or disabled)
    location (latitude/longitude coordinates) that determines when the transition period will begin, based on sunrise/sunset time
    color temperature currently in use (the value changes in real time as the transition period progresses)
    period (daytime, nighttime, and transition period countdown display as a changing percentage in real time)
  • quit the application
Allowing it autostart will allow it to run without any intervention, following the sunrise and sunset times to begin the transition period between daytime and nighttime settings. It will then essentially be set it and forget it.

First Stuart M, my apologies. I guess I'm not well versed on when to start a new thread. I thought it was more appropriate to discuss the redshift problem on a thread that was already discussing it. I didn't want a pseudo repeat thread, and I thought it would be preferable to those that search on this topic later to find all answers to their question regarding getting redshift to run in the same thread. I'll have to plead ignorance apparently on when it is appropriate, or not, to start a new thread.

But, thank you. What the heck. I typed in redshift, and it worked. This after I spent about 30 minutes setting up Zeit to change the color using sct every 30 minutes throughout the day, haha.

BC, I have to say, I tend to agree with you nevertheless. I mean, why shouldn't same themes be discussed in the one (active) thread. I expect if the thread was marked SOLVED by Susan it might be a different matter (I am not certain your original post occurred after Susan had marked it thus). It would be useful/educational, if the moderator could chime in with any recommendations in order to clarify things for us all.

Also remember that this thread is in the "Tips & Tricks by users" category and thus there is no need to add "Solved" to a thread since there is nothing to be solved - what is presented here is mostly just informative. It is rare that a thread asking for help will slip-by the moderators, such as this https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 64#p701164 4 November 2022 thread, but those are usually moved to the proper category which will be indicated by the "Moved Topic" icon that appears at the beginning of the topic subject line. (I'm not a moderator so I will add that this is just my opinion.)

In the "MX Help" category other users often add their post to a thread giving their problems to varying degrees of similarity to the original poster's problem and, for the most part that seems to be okay. But the risk is that the thread can quickly get off topic from what the original poster was asking.

In this thread, the original poster did not ask anything although it started with the premise that Redshift did not work "out of the box" in MX-21. That was just the background to the post. The original poster made this thread giving the solution to the problem with the creation of a Redshift configuration file that was shown. But the next post (#2) gives a problem asking for help which should have been done in the "MX Help" category. Doing that will give more coverage to his problem because it will create a thread with a subject line identifying the problem which will make it easier to find by other users searching the forum for related problems. (I know searching can be done by also searching the text of threads, but having the problem in the subject line makes it easier to locate or see when there are many search returns - in my opinion.)

Perhaps I should have been more clear by saying bcreighton should have started his own thread asking for help and put it in the "MX Help" category (and not in the "Tips & Tricks by users" category.)

OK,

Thanks Stuart. I'll try to be more circumspect in the future. This time I just went off a list of search results and didn't really pay attention to the category.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

These 3 commands make redshift work perfect on my laptop. tray applet and all.

1) cd /tmp
git clone "https://github.com/xflux-gui/fluxgui.git"
cd fluxgui
./download-xflux.py

2) sudo ./setup.py install --record installed.txt
3) Install redshift itself from the repos

Then just start it with running "fluxgui" in the terminal.

I recently tried to get redshift working on a new install of mx23.3 on a different computer and I was unable to get it to work, I created a file redshift.conf @ ~/.config/redshift.conf just as I had done back in March 2022.
with file contents like this:
[redshift]
temp-day=5700
temp-night=2700
gamma=0.8
adjustment-method=randr
location-provider=manual

[manual]
lat=50.43
lon=1.53

but I got the same problems other people have reported about geoclue.
I just can't remember how I got redshift working before back in March of 2022, as far as I remember I just created the redshift.conf file and it worked.
Anyway I gave up in the end and now am using xsct
It works from the command line, it's very simple and does not need location provider, if you are interested heres the Github page @ https://github.com/faf0/sct
I installed it via synaptic.
Hope that helps anyone. :happy:

Yeah I just tried to get redshift working on 23.3 and the gui functioned but allowed for no actual settings so I removed it completely. My previous cmd's for flux don't work either. TG it does not affect daily operations. ce la ve. Plus I don't feel like working with geoclue or manually editing files just to make it work. Geoclue went bye bye as well.

I have never used redshift, my favorite is SCT
https://github.com/faf0/sct
not automatically, but control via the command line, or in Fluxbox via keyboard or submenu.
In my case via submenu, additionally with monitor off (timeout = 10 sec) and monitor default (timeout 10 minutes)

Code: Select all

[begin] (screens)

   [exec] (Monitor default) {sct}
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 2000) {sct 2000 }
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 3000) {sct 3000 }
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 4000) {sct 4000 }
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 5000) {sct 5000 }
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 6000) {sct 6000 }
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 7000) {sct 7000 }
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 8000) {sct 8000 }
   [exec] (Farbtemperatur 9000) {sct 9000 }

[separator]

  [exec] (monitor aus) {xset s 10 }
  [exec] (monitor an) {xset s 600 }

[separator]

  [exec] (Einträge editieren) {featherpad ~/.fluxbox/submenus/screens} </home/winnI/.fluxbox/fbmenugen/icons/4b39d86c257173fff457b9efbfdf7ea3.png>

[end]

Yes, sct became xsct with Bookworm (MX-23) :)
viewtopic.php?p=776878#p776878

And when I did use redshift, I used redshift-gtk - in the panel.
