Redshift (redshift and redshift-gui) will automatically start and run after every log-in when an entry is made in "Session and Startup".
- When Redshift (redshift-gui) is installed, launch it from the Whisker menu. Then click the Redshift Panel icon to bring up a menu to enable "Autostart" (it is disabled by default.) That will automatically create and enable an entry in "Session and Startup"
- redshift is the back-end (command line only) of redshift-gui. That will take a few more simple steps to have it start automatically by manually making an entry in "Session and Startup".
When Redshift is installed from the MXPI "Popular Applications" tab, both redshift and redshift-gui will be installed and there will be a Redshift entry in the Whisker Menu to launch it. If redshift only is wanted then go to the MXPI Stable tab and select it there. If redshift-gui is installed from the MXPI Stable tab then it will automatically pull in redshift with it, identical to using the MXPI "Popular Applications" tab to install.
I find it very advantageous to use redshift-gui for several reasons:
- Redshift appears on the Panel allowing it to be easily disabled/enabled without closing it
- allows it to be suspended for 0.5, 1, or 2 hours
- allows it to be autostarted and that can be enabled/disabled (it is disabled by default)
- allows an information window to appear, specifically:
status (enabled or disabled)
location (latitude/longitude coordinates) that determines when the transition period will begin, based on sunrise/sunset time
color temperature currently in use (the value changes in real time as the transition period progresses)
period (daytime, nighttime, and transition period countdown display as a changing percentage in real time) - quit the application
