Recent kernel upgrade broke Nvidia graphics

#1 Post by fanisatt »

After I got (today) a kernel update (new kernel : 5.10.0-29) I noticed that the nvidia graphics was broken. So I tried sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia .
After this I reboot and reinstall nvidia drivers with mx-tool. Unfortunately I have the same situation !
So I tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-kernel-dkms.
And I got :
dpkg-query: package 'nvidia-kernel-dkms' is not installed and no information is available
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files.
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: the nvidia-kernel-dkms is not installed
After this I gave again : sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia (to clear again the nvidia files...waiting for help).

Any ideas please ?

... Or :

Code: Select all

sudo cat /var/log/ddm.log | nc termbin.com 9999
Post the link it gives as the output.

in the meantime

maybe the current debian kernel doesn't play well with the nvidia drivers. they have broke this before (in fact did so on bookworm not long ago).

my suggestion is boot with the previous kernel, then to remove the linux-image-5.10.0-29-amd64 kernel and linux-headers-5.10.0-29-amd64, and then reinstall nvidia drivers.

Yes I have already done this "meantime" thought.
Never mind if I have to wait for a while without nvidia drivers . I had to be sure that I am not alone and I saw an other user with the same problem.
So....it's all ok here !!
Many Thanks !

It seems it was successful previously with:

nvidia-driver 460.91.03-1
and kernel 5.10.0-9

then not with 470 and 5.10.0-29

and it got stuck (a kind of vicious circle) with:

Code: Select all

Errors were encountered while processing:
 nvidia-kernel-dkms
 nvidia-driver
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
So, we can/need to "scrape" them:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/info/nvidia* /tmp/ ; sudo dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq nvidia-kernel-dkms ; sudo dpkg --purge --force-remove-reinstreq nvidia-driver ; sudo dpkg --configure -a
