How to change Critical CPU Temp

#1 Post by kmiles »

Hi, I've got a laptop (zenbook UX305LA) with a broken fan (I think) and I want to lower the critical cpu temp from 94`C to 80`C, to keep it from killing itself with frequent temp swings (from 55`C to 94`C).
I noticed that sensors lists the high&critical temps to be 105`C. Is the cpu self-limiting to 94`C during heavy load?

Code: Select all

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0:  +53.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 0:        +53.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1:        +53.0°C  (high = +105.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
I've also got tlp-ui installed but I don't know what to configure in there.
Regardless, how do I change those max temps in lm-sensors?

It sounds like you either need to replace the fan, or check the air flow. But using pwmconfig and fancontrol should give you the ability to regulate / modify the fan speeds. (I have only ever worked this on HP's and lenovo's. )

Give this a read, I think it has most everything you might need.

*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

Your laptop is ten years old and the most likely cause of the over heating problem is that it needs ans interior cleaning (dust build up is a insulator). This video shows you how to open the case and clean the fan;

HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

After cleaning it if it still doesn't work it might be worth replacing it than trying to limit the temperature by software means, I found a fan for your laptop on aliexpress for $15 and on eBay a used one for $10...

I realize that I probably should've added more context:

I say "broken fan" but its just that it doesn't work. I'm not actually sure if its broken since I have no way to test it for now. I've cleaned up inside and the fan is also clean.
The only reason why I'm trying to do it this way instead of fixing the fan is because I will only use this laptop for testing purposes (like trying out distros) or for leisure. I plan to buy a new fan (if I find out its broken) but right now I'm saving up for a flash drive and SSD to make backups of Win11 on my main laptop.

I'm from Philippines so electronics are a bit pricier here, especially if parts are imported. cheapest I found on aliexpress is $39 and I can't find any in eBay.

It might be a good idea to replace the thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink. After ten years of service it's likely totally dry and of little effect.

I have already re-pasted the cpu when I cleaned it out inside. The old paste was flaking off whilst I was trying to clean it off haha.

@tequila
I'll try that later but I want to try changing the limits in lm-sensors first and see if I'm satisfied with that.
I remember being able to change that but I don't remember how.

Yeah, I would try a live session of some other distros before opening it up, just to confirm that the fan is broken.

Yup, I've tried Zorin Lite, Pop!, Linux Lite, Mint, miniOS, and Peppermint OS. Fan doesn't work. Does anyone know how to change temp limits?
