Thumb drive doesn't show in Disk Manager

#1 Post by clampett »

During all my futzing around with my USB drive and trying different formatting,
I found that the USB drive shows in Thunar as soon as plugged in, but I have to click on it to mount.
In Gparted it shows as soon as plugged in.
But Disk Manager does not show thumb drives. It does show hdd drives plugged into the usb port though.
Does Disk Manager not show thumb drives or is this another riddle for me solve on my system?
Listed below as #4.

They're not shown here, too.

I guess it's intentionally made such by disk-manager to not conflict with udisks provided mount/automount of removable media as utilized GUI file manager like Thunar using gio-api. The original "idea" of disk-manager was to add the missing function "to mount" or gui-mount internal partitions" and put into "automount" with /etc/fstab. Also there are already some "small" conflicts with mounting and unmounting internal drives, when doing this with both tools. B/c Thunar through udisk takes care to remove the mount-point directory but only if the original mount was done by Thunar (or udisks). So you may even for internal drive get remaining mount points. Next mount with Thunar you get suddenly a different point point (with a number added to the directory name).
We mitigated this for internal drives a bit to place the suggested mount point under /media instead of /media/user,
to avoid conflicts with udisks mounts (even better to use always something under /mnt to avoid any conflict.)

Thank you for reminding me to check that. I had it previously, but when I reinstalled (preserving my /home), I thought it was still checked. But it wasn't.
Simple things I miss sometimes.

fehlix wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 2:56 pm I guess it's intentionally made such by disk-manager to not conflict with udisks provided mount/automount of removable media as utilized GUI file manager like Thunar using gio-api.
Okie Dokie, that' clears it's up. Thanks @fehlix
