Problem getting sound through NVIDIA

#1 Post by dsbytes »

I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex system with an NVIDIA card and just connected my speakers to the HDMI monitor. I can boot the computer in either Windows 10 or MX Linux.

In Win 10 the speakers work, but they don't in the Linux boot. My system configuration is as follows:

I have tried switching to the NVIDIA card via the alsamixer but that had no effect. Can anyone offer some guidance? Thanks in advance.

Just to make it clear: The sound is ok with others, right? (speakers/headphones etc..)

Have you tried to install nvidia driver? ( "Nvidia Driver Installer" in menu)

P.S. If you haven't: Disable "Fast Startup" on Windows. (Cause it keeps devices engaged for it doesn't really shutdown).

From Google:

Search for and open Control Panel using the search feature.
Choose View by: Category, then select Hardware and Sound.
Select Power Options.
Select Choose what the power buttons do.
Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Check or uncheck turn on fast startup to enable or disable the feature.
calm down.... it's only ones and zeroes...

The NVIDIA driver is already installed. I guess the Liquorix kernel recognized the card and installed the driver for me? Not sure. But when I went to install the driver I got this message:

nvidia driver already installed.

I will disable "Fast Startup" on Windows.

I can hear a faint sound coming out of the computer's onboard speakers when playing a YouTube video for instance.

open context menu from speaker symbol of taskbar (right mouse button) and select 'configure audio'
Select different playback device (currently 'line-out' might be selected), i.e. nvidia hdmi or something like that

Thanks. I admit I don't understand this. System info is telling me the driver is not installed, but when I go to install it, I get a message that it is?

The Liquorix kernel does not install the Nvidia driver, especially the 530.xx version we see that is not even in any of our repos. You have not blacklisted the nouveau driver either, and that may be at the heart of the matter.

First thing is to determine how these things got on your system. Does anyone else have access to it?

https://packages.debian.org/search?keyw ... ection=all
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Thanks Stevo and others. I'm the only user of the system. No one else has access. I am a novice linux user and recently purchased this (refurbished) Optiplex for learning purposes. The computer came with a relatively recent vintage NVIDIA card and I am trying to get it working properly with an appropriate driver. I want to learn something about the CUDA language and programming of the GPUs. I am not sure what documentation to refer to, to successfully switch from the driver that's currently installed to the NVIDIA driver that will allow me to do CUDA programming. From your post it looks like I need to blacklist the nouveau driver. I will look into how to do that.

The thing that confused me was that I got this message when running the Nvidia driver installer from MX Tools:

Code: Select all

Distribution: MX

Latest  = 525.147.05
Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation TU116 [GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER] [10de:21c4] (rev a1)

Your card is supported by the nvidia tesla 470 drivers series. nvidia-tesla-470-driver
Your card is supported by the nvidia 525.147.05 drivers series. nvidia-driver

It is recommended to install the following:
INSTALL: nvidia-driver

To install alternate driver packages, use sudo ddm-mx -i nvidia -f [driver package name]

Overall the system is running great and I am achieving my goal of learning. I installed the Liquorix kernel a few days ago and it resolved an issue I had with screen lock ups. I have not had one lock up since starting to use Liquorix, so I am assuming that is what I need on this system.
