Long shutdown time

#1 Post by strikeymate »

Hello.
I am 73 years old and making my first post here. Although I been using Linux for a few years now, my ability to solve problems is limited.
I have Mx Light 21.3 (wildflower) 64 bit after changing from 21.3 ahs (Thought I had a virus is why I changed)
I am very happy with everything except shutdown as I do every night before bed.
If I reboot or shutdown after only a few hours its fine, but if its left on all day (maybe 12-14 hours) it will take about 3 minutes to shutdown.
Normally with other distros shuts down in 5-10 seconds.
Made sure all programs I started have been closed, and even disconnect from internet which seems to work better "sometimes".
I get no error messages, just what appears to be a frozen desktop.
I am wondering if Firefox has something to do with it
The apps I use are Firefox uTube mainly, Timeshift on auto, Thunderbird email, and Cherrytree mainly.
When I tried to force a shutdown is the only error message I got which I attach.
Otherwise I am very happy with Mx Light and grateful to those involved in creating it.
Thank you for any advice.

Welcome in!

Do you have any removable drives connected normally or do you have any fstab connections to drives not in your system? (say network drives or shared drive from another machine? )

I also will say that I believe you will have a much nicer time using a liquorix kernel. my MX21's run WAY nicer on 6.4.15, 6.5.11 or 6.611 . You can always roll back if trouble or you dont like them.

To install - turn on ahs in the repo manager, then do an update. Go to MX Package Installer and search for liquorix and change to the Enabled tab. Check the Image and Header for the version you would like to try, then check "also install recommended..." in the lower right corner - and click install. Once your done installing, reboot and check your QSI to verify you are running on the kernel you installed. (boot options and select it if not.)

Also, your showing using a RAID setup in your bios and driver, but it looks like your using regular drives. if your NOT using raid, I would go into your bios and switch it to ahci - this could be the entire issue.

*MXPI = MX Package Installer

in the MX Boot Options program you could remove the "quiet splash" (without the quotes) kernel parameters. that wouldn't take effect on the present boot session, but the next time you booted you would see some boot messages. as well, i believe you should also see them when shutting down. that may allow you to get an idea what is holding things up.

i don't know if it may be affecting the shutdown, but your second gpu doesn't appear to have a driver loaded (driver: N/A):

there is some info about that gpu in the linux hardware database that suggests it may also benefit from a newer kernel (5.16 or higher) like has been suggested: https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci:8086-4905-1025-1482

You are correct... but then that means that your running on the latest and will keep running on the latest. Some folks dont want to on the very latest - and when I see people on 5.x kernels this means to me that there is a very good chance they dont want to be. (I suppose I should show both options though... thank you.)

Thanks for all inputs... I was not notified of your posts and only see them today while checking.... how do I configure to be notified after a response? I check in my "manage notifications" but not see a way.
Also, I have solve my problem. I look in Power Manager and check all settings which were as normal for me... but just to try, I switch "Display" never to go to sleep or hibernate... and believe it or not.... all good now. Just a fluke I guess, however I will never know the real cause.
I put Solved in the subject line.... is this the right way? Not a normal forum user sorry.
