(solved) grub das not recognise 2nd harddisk in expansion slot

#1 Post by waldmattis »

Good evening,
I use an HP laptop that works perfectly with MX.
I have now removed the internal DVD burner and am using a caddy in its place so that I can use 2.5" hard drives as a second drive in the laptop.

Now I have tried to configure grub so that I can choose when switching on the computer whether I want to boot from the built-in hard drive or from the caddy (temporary drive).

The 1TB drive boots perfectly when I swap it for the fixed drive.

Can I achieve that my desired configuration
- 1TB in the caddy
and the
- 450 GIB permanently installed
grub offers both discs for selection when the computer is switched on?

At the moment grub only offers the sda (450 GiB) for booting.
I attach 3 screenshot with sda and sdb in gparted.

I am grateful for any advice.

Have a good Easter week everyone!

Best regards
Karl

Have you looked at MX Boot Options? I believe I saw a method in there to choose how / where you wanted to boot. (I havent tried making that change, but it looks like you could.)
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.

That's not GRUB you select from. B/c grub will only see what BIOS send to GRUB.
On BIOS/MBR booting you select boot device by pressing a Fn-key (on HP maybe F9 or F10) to choose
the BIOS booting device.
Also some "older" bios-(emulation) might only list BIOS-booting devices,
if there is an partition with a boot-flag on.
Or those attached drive may be enabled to be allowed to boot from.
And mixing GPT and MBR/DOS formatted drives may confuse those "BIOS system further",
b/c both require different "bios-driver to get loaded, BIOS/MBR emulated booting may not
be the main development/testing target of those OEM PC BIOS/UEFI systems.
The picture shown do only show a fraction of the situation, e.g with not showing all partitions,
you may have missed whether an boot-flag set or not.

@CharlesV
@fehlix

CharlesV:
thank you so much for your help! You gave me the right advice - it is a matter of going into BIOS at startup and select expansion slot

@fehlix
you helped me so much in the past. Therefore I give you ***** (should be stars) ;-)

I know,
that I am in the wrong thread for the request
"Please Package PAPERLESS-NGX v2.2.1 from Dec-29-2023"
in the wrong thread, but despite over 16 thousand views, which shows a lot of interest, I haven't had a supportive response yet.
Or have I missed something?

If you want me to post this request elsewhere on MXforum, I'll be happy to do so.

Wishing you both and your families a pleasant and relaxing Easter
Karl

Addendum: I add a screenshot regarding
"Please Package PAPERLESS-NGX v2.2.1 from Dec-29-2023"

Glad you have it resolved.

Please mark as solved using the check mark on the top right of the post that resolved it.

As for paperless-ngx , your post in December was in the right area and I am sure the dev's have seen it. The question is if it can be included, and I suspect there is an issue.

It DOES look excellent though and I have a few people that might be interested in this solution - So I will be checking it out shortly.
