Odd Wi-Fi Problem with different desktop environments, and more

#1 Post by studioman »

Hello, new MXLinux user here, and pretty noob with linux overall too. Hopefully someone can help me with couple of problems!

I have a weird wifi issue with AVLinux MX edition 23.1.

Some background info: I am using about 10 years old Samsung laptop. I tried Ubuntu 22.04.2 and Ubuntu Studio 22.04.2. For some reason wifi was hard-blocked after suspend. Tried literally everything that I could find with google and messed quite a while with terminal but nothing worked. So I switched to ChromeOS Flex and wifi worked as supposed, but had overheating problems (fan wouldn't kick on when needed). And dependency to Google was a turnoff too.

So now I decided to try AVLinux. Everything works great with default Enlightenment desktop environment. But it's a little messy and confusing for me so I installed Budgie from MX Package Installer. As a long time Mac user it felt great and clean.

1) But now the problem: Wifi works in Budgie, but when I click the network/wifi button in panel it says network manager is not available. Same thing when I check network settings. But Wifi and internet connection still works! But I can't change the network or add a new network. Any suggestions?

I have no idea if my old wifi problems have anything to do with this new one, but decided to tell the whole story. :)

2) Also, backlight of the screen turns off in login prompt and brightness buttons do nothing (outside login screen they work fine)... I had to turn automatic login off to change desktop environment and needed a flashlight to write login info to get things going.

3) And another question: I have 2 graphic cards in this laptop. How to change primary graphics card to better Nvidia one? I tried NvidiaX Server settings, but it says that server is not running..

Thanks in advance for the possible help! Here's my system info:

AVL-MXe uses connman and not network manager.

For the backlight issue, try this in Enlightenment.

Enlightenment settings > Look > Compositor > General > check mark the box Don't fade backlight

Thanks! Backlight issue seems fixed.

Is there a GUI to connman that works in Budgie? Preferably an applet to top bar but just something to change networks would also suffice. I can manage with Enlightenment but perhaps not the best for me.

It seems that networkmanager doesn't behave well with my computer, since there was issues with Ubuntu but not with current system that has connman.

Any hint to enabling Nvidia graphics instead of Intel HD graphics?

And one more: Closing lid doesn't enable suspend. I couldn't find setting for it. It could be that in AVLinux it is disabled by default..?

Code: Select all

sudo apt install cmst -y
Then make sure it's in autostart ( cmst -m to make it start minimized to panel / tray )

Thanks Charlie Brown! Cmst works fine.

I found that I can open apps via terminal with Nvidia graphics enabled. https://mxlinux.org/wiki/hardware/2-graphics-drivers/ But is there a way to enable it globally and always use the better Nvidia chip?

Intel chip seems to currently render the internal screen:

Screen-1: 0 s-res: 1366x768 s-dpi: 96 s-size: 361x203mm (14.21x7.99") s-diag: 414mm (16.31")
