Display not resuming from Power Save Put to Sleep After & Switch Off After

#1 Post by fbagnato »

Hello all,

I have recently installed MX Linux v23.2 on an old Compaq Presario C700 Laptop.

I have then run MX Updater and installed all updates to existing programs (some dependencies were also consequentially installed).

The problem I am having is related to Power Save.

When the screen resumes from either "Put to Sleep After" & "Switch Off After" (Display tab in Power Settings) I get a functioning mouse cursor but the rest of the screen is black. It is not resuming properly from these modes. I then have to force off the power to turn the laptop off.

If I set "Put to Sleep After" & "Switch Off After" to "Never" and leave "Blank after" activated the display goes to the Screensaver after the set time and resumes fine when the mouse is moved.

I have set Put to Sleep After & Switch Off After to Never and tested the other Power settings, such as "System" "System Sleep Mode = Suspend" and "When Laptop lid is closed = Switch off display" and all remaining Power settings seem to work.

In Windows the computer is identified as an APCI computer.

Windows device "Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family". lspci -v shows that display device is being handled by "i915" Kernel Module but "i965 -va-driver" is installed.

The only related thing that could be of significance is that the first log message I receive upon startup is:

"ACPI BIOS Error (bug): \_SB.PCI0._OSC: Excess arguments - ASL declared 5, ACPI requires 4 (202220331/nsarguments-162)"

The BIOS on the computer is the latest version available.

Regarding Windows device "Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family". lspci -v shows that display device is being handled by "i915" Kernel Module but "i965 -va-driver" is installed, does that mean it is not using the "i965 -va-driver"?

If not what do I need to do to replace the "i915" Kernel Module with the "i965 -va-driver"?

The problem seems to be related to the display hence why I am asking.

Regards,

fbagnato

That's a long time (since MX-19 "Beta") known problem due to the buggy xfce4-screensaver (yes, sadly it's there ootb and just disabling etc. doesn't help). Just get rid of it. You can install something else instead to lock the screen (if you like). This will do it at one go:

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge xfce4-screensaver -y ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install light-locker -y
Reboot

Hello Eadwine Rose and Charlie Brown,

Thanks for both of your replies.

Changing to light-locker as stated by Charlie Brown fixed the problem.

Thanks again for replying.

Hello @Charlie Brown

Don't know why but I am having the same problem again.

I checked power settings and in Security it mentions "Light-locker" so it seems to be using the correct screensaver.

I don't know if it started after a reboot or related to changes I am making in grub (another thread I posted which you replied to).

I checked if xfce4-screensaver has reinstalled and it hasn't.

I checked if light-locker is installed and it is.

Hope you know why it has reverted to the same problem.'

It was definitely working when I did the changeover from xfce4-screensaver to light-locker.

As I said I don't know if it stopped working after a reboot since installing light-locker.

UPDATE: It's also happening on the Blank Screen parameter which originally wasn't happening with xfce4-screensaver so it now happening on all Display tab settings: "Blank after", "Put to sleep after" and "Switch off after"

UPDATE 2: If I run

Code: Select all

light-locker-command -q
I get

Code: Select all

$ light-locker-command -q
The screensaver is inactive
If I run

Code: Select all

light-locker-command -a
I get a flash of the screen then back to the normal screen.

I then run again

Code: Select all

light-locker-command -q
And I get

Code: Select all

$ light-locker-command -q
The screensaver is inactive
It seems that light-locker is not on and cannot be turned on for some reason. (or I may not be understanding how light-locker-command works)

Hello @Charlie Brown & @Eadwine Rose,

As mentioned in my previous post the problem has not been solved.

I have now run

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge light-locker -y ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install xfce4-screensaver -y
So that I can get the Quick System Info on a baseline measurement for Eadwine Rose.

@Charlie Brown I have no problem in reinstalling light-locker if the problem can be fixed.

@Eadwine Rose here is the output of Quick System Info:

Ok. The main idea is just to get rid of the xfce4-screensaver, that's why I wrote "if you like" for light-locker.. I mean it doesn't have to be that one or you don't have to use anything to lock screen (just generally it's something you would want for privacy)..

Shortly: Again remove the xfce4-screensaver (and if you like light-locker, too, or just uncheck the "lock screen before going to sleep" in power manager settings)

But: 6.1.0-18 is known to be buggy (though generally with Nvidia and yours is Intel). So, I would remove the 2 and boot the pc with any other kernel (either an older one via "Advanced Options" on grub, or just install (the most recent one while you're at it) "Liquorix" kernel from "MX Package Installer" with just 2 clicks, reboot with that) and try.

(If still the same (different kernel & no screensavers and no screen lockers) you can play with "Vblank" in "MX Tweak" - Compositor tab (choose other options instead of the default "Auto" .. )

Hello Charlie Brown,

I have managed to get both xfce4-screensaver and light-locker resuming from all Display power saving options.

In case others have the same problem these were the steps:

1) Open "MX Tweak"

2) Bring up the "Other" tab

3) Tick the checkbox "Use Intel driver instead of default "modesetting" driver (requires restart)"

4) Restart the computer

Even with xfce4-screensaver working the screen was not locking even though the "Lock screen when system is going to sleep" was ticked. I am guessing that that setting only relates to when the system, not the display, goes to sleep mode (ie. suspend).

Setting the "Automatically lock the session" to "When the screensaver is activated" in the Power Manager/Security tab when light-locker is installed achieves the desired effect.

Thanks for all your help Charlie Brown and hope this helps anyone else with the same problem (would really relate to Intel displays).

Regards,

My goodness, I deliberately did not suggest that, as it was a remedy on MX 21 but was ok on 23 (a kind of weirdness, cause it's already driver: X: loaded: intel , and it needs a conf file to be created, that option does that) , I wish I suggested that, this is the 1st instance on MX-23.. So, you did well trying that and thank you for the feedback :)

Hi,
@Charlie Brown, I will also mention that just enabling that checkbox also worked for me.
I was having the same situation where when trying to wake, the login screen wouldn't render but still able to type in password and login. With the last frame before sleep is what's on screen with a movable mouse.

p.s. why is mention not working for me? is there a specific way to mention someone besides just the @?
