[SOLVED] Synaptic not running

#1 Post by DPool »

I am using a recent upgrade to 23.2 and everything has been working just fine (at least as far as the packages and tools I've used to date)....except, just now, Symantic. It wouldn't boot up from any of the GUI ways so I tried it via the terminal to see what was (or wasn't) going on, and I saw this:

Code: Select all

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'Xapian::DataBaseCorruptError'
Aborted
Any thoughts here? Thanks!

We are going to need your computer’s complete profile before we can proceed, so you need to post the output from the QSI utility. The Quick System Info (QSI) utility is located in MX Tools and its output is automatically formatted for use here in the forum. Run the QSI utility, click “Copy for Forum” at the bottom and then just paste it here in your thread.
Forum Rules
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

you can try removing the contents of /var/cache/apt-xapian-index/index.1

the files should get rebuilt on next launch of synaptic.

Your lack of a swap partition is cause for concern. There are a lot of folks touting the idea that with enough ram available you can forgo creating a swap partition or file, but the reality is that some applications still expect it to be there (even though it may never be used) and can give unpredictable results when swap space is not present. The good news is that you can add a swap file at any time and here’s how:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/ ... -debian-11
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Believe it or not...at least as far as Thunar goes (I don't trust my very limited command of...commands), in the right-click generated options available for that content, Delete is among the choices that are dimmed out.

That is likely because you are in there as regular user and you need to be root for that. "Open root thunar here" :)

Indeed. That much terminal I can do! And, @dolphin_oracle, once that content was deleted, all was good again! Thanks!

Is there anything in particular that might've caused this problem to begin with? Anything to be aware of?

Next time you can do this (if you like)

Code: Select all

sudo rm /var/cache/apt-xapian-index/index.1/*
:)

Thanks! It's now in this thread which I can search for the next time. But the question stands: will there be a next time? And, if so, why?
