mx23 ahs release: auto update kernels
We have bee playing with the notion of doing automatic kernel updates on the ahs releases. We would use the liquorix kernels for this.
This poll will run for one week. I and the development team reserve the right to make the final decision.

+1
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;
In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Re: mx23 ahs release: auto update kernels
I am barely concerned (hence won't vote), being too cheap to run recent HW, but i am not sure i see the point. If an unsuspecting user's PC is properly supported by the kernel included on the AHS ISO, why risk regressions by upgrading kernel version (on the installed system) ? Automatic kernel updates IMO should only happen for security/bugfix reasons, like for the debian stable kernel release (which remains at the same version). Plus rebuilding the dkms drivers can test one's patience...

Just: The dot releases are very frequent on Liquorix, therefore it may also be tiresome for users , every 3-4 days ... It may be better just from i.e. 6.6.x to 6.7 ... 6.8...
Re: mx23 ahs release: auto update kernels
If that's the case, it definitely needs to be an opt-in not an opt-out...Charlie Brown wrote: Mon Dec 04, 2023 12:02 pm Just: The dot releases are very frequent on Liquorix, therefore it may also be tiresome for users , every 3-4 days ... It may be better just from i.e. 6.6.x to 6.7 ... 6.8...

Re: mx23 ahs release: auto update kernels
My first attempt at running Linux on a laptop full-time began with a since-discontinued Arch distro called Antergos. I didn't know enough about Arch to switch it to use the LTS kernel package, so I ended up having a new kernel get installed on me about twice a week. This would have been merely annoying in the best of cases but I was running ZFS on root, so every kernel update demanded a 20-minute DKMS compilation that, if it failed for any reason, would render the machine unbootable.Charlie Brown wrote: Mon Dec 04, 2023 12:02 pm Just: The dot releases are very frequent on Liquorix, therefore it may also be tiresome for users , every 3-4 days ... That lasted about five weeks before I gave up in disgust.

Re: mx23 ahs release: auto update kernels
we already have that on the main releases. that is not what is being discussed here.figueroa wrote: Mon Dec 04, 2023 1:30 pm I would prefer auto-update with the mainstream LTS kernel. I believe that suits the majority of users with less fuss.

... and it'll be a (too) long interval, as AHS is meant for latest hardware, especially for those waiting for the most recent kernels (most of the times as the remedy) as soon as possible ...
