Serious problem with package Kodi

#1 Post by j.kemp »

After installing the Kodi package, I notice it want to start in full screen mode after logging into the system. It starts by asking to load plugins. After creating new user, so I don't use the Demo account Kodi starts on it on asking the same. Install add-ons That's just the beginning. You cannot not exit. It kicks you out of the user's desktop. Same thing for the root user. I had to uninstall it just to complete the new user setup. I'm afraid to reinstall it after setting up daily account.

MX Linux 23.1
Kodi version 20.1

kodi installs a session option, so it can run instead of a regular desktop. installing kodi makes the session the default. you can choose your usual session from the login screen, same as any other desktop.

kodi does have an exit menu. I think "exit" will log you out, but I forget the exact option.

That's what I was using. It is hijacking all other users, is what I'm trying to say. I chose my username. Anyone who logs into the system is met with a full screen Kodi that will not allow you to use your desktop. Especially new users. Even after selecting your own username. There is something wrong. When you select exit from the exit menu, it waits about two minutes, then kicks you out to the desktop login screen.

Install Kodi, then run it. Exit. Then create a new user and see what happens. On my system it started Kodi on its own even though that new user never open the package. It's opening even though the user selected their own name.

One thing I did was to copy from one user to the new user. Like I mention, I was transitioning from user Demo to new user. (I wanted to keep Demo, but remove all customizations) I uninstalled Kodi, so I can use my system. It even hijacked the root user desktop. After I uninstalled it, I could log into other users.

the desktop setting is saved on a per user basis. and kodi will be default on all users. so each user will need the change made.

I get that. The problem is, it slams back to the login screen when it eventually exits. Why is it loading when users log into their desktop? Maybe it's the way I described the problem. I already uninstalled it. I'll move on.

once you make a selection, that selection will stick for the user. but you do have to choose a desktop from lightdm first.

so exit, choose your desktop, login. the choice will stick then.

kodi is launching as the desktop session, not just a regular application. like if you were using on a TV/media pc. So its not Kodi running on Xfce. Its just kodi. loging out, selecting Xfce, and login will keep the user's desktop at Xfce. You'll still be albe to run kodi from the desktop if you wish, and exit won't take you to the login screen.

I don't think, that kodi is the source of evil.

I use mx23.1 (kde) with kodi and I use kodi as an desktop application.
Means, linux starts with kde desktop. When I want to watch movies, I start kodi which in turn starts its application in fullscreen mode.
I could setup kodi as known from LE usage. I didn't have to perform some unusual configuration tasks. Everything works as known from former releases.
When I leave kodi, I'm back at kde desktop.
The only issues I have are related to audio setup, which is pain in the a...
... but kodi works as expected!

Kodi in full screen, press \ IIRC to switch to windowed. Somewhere in the kodi settings you can set it to windowed mode.
