Help for Current Versions of MX
When asking for help, use Quick System Info from MX Tools. It will be properly formatted using the following steps.
1. Click on Quick System Info in MX Tools
2. Right click in your post and paste.

Updates Broke Ghostery Security Browser

I ran today's MX Linux update (25October2023)

Then I clicked Help and About in Ghostery to see if it was up to date.

That, unfortunately, triggered an automatic update.

After a minute it said that a restart was required to install the update.

I logged out of Facebook (and also a scanner app) then chose OK.

Ghostery closed but didn't re-open. I tried the launcher on the panel - no response.

I tried rebooting the laptop - no joy.

I tried launching from Terminal - no joy.

I looked and it appeared that the Ghostery update may have failed - incomplete.

I found "Install the Ghostery browser on Linux" at www.addictivetips.com and installed ver. 10.

Still no response.

I don't know if the attached pictures of the screen help at all. Any suggestions, please?

Are you seeing any messages when you try to run it in a terminal?

You might try using Repo Manager in MX Tools to switch your main repo from R.I.T. to the one in Salt Lake City and then try updating again. I've seen enough instances in the past few months where the R.I.T. repository wasn't quite up to date. Remember to log out / in or reboot after the repo change but before you update.

The MX update seemed OK but I can make the repo change, thanks! I'm thinking both updates, without a reboot in-between, may have caused a problem with the Ghostery update. That said - reinstalling Ghostery should work ...

Weird then that it doesn't work. It's there in the screen pic from File Manager (previous). Could it be something stuck in a buffer? (I have rebooted the laptop, so they should have cleared.)

I personally use stacer to clear / clean caches etc. There are two - app cache and update cache. Both can be cleaned by the MX Cleanup tool as well. (And probably a little safer. )

You could try clearing / cleaning app and update cache, then reinstall Ghostery, reboot and see it that resolves it.

I copied .ghostery browser to save my history and settings.

Will MX Cleanup ask what to remove e.g. the older and newer installs? Just looked at it and ran it - I see that I'll need to manually delete the old files.
