Yes, Cairo dock can exist with teh standard XFCE docks (Thats how I run - xfce4 on the side, and Cario on the bottom.)

This is exactly what I do with the Plank dock: Xfce Panel on the left side (as per the default), and Plank on the bottom.

I assume the Plank dock replaced the XFCE dock.

I did nothing to the Xfce Panel (what you refer to as a "dock"). I just left it in the default position (left-hand side of the screen), and added the Plank dock, positioned on the bottom.

Sounds like you can do the same with Cairo.

And using MX Tweak, you have the ability to backup ALL of your panels too. (If you want to experiment and NOT loose your panel settings. but THIS is what a VM is for :-) )

Play with the options (responsibly; i.e., back-up)

I've managed to tweak the stock XFCE panel to meet my needs. That is I switched to the Windows Buttons mode and making it play for me. It's not perfect but nothing ever is. It gets the job done.

I do like that the XFCE panel can be accessed by the Super (Windows) key, just like the Windows start menu. I don't quite see the equivalent in the Cairo Dock. Yes it has the XFCE menu equivalent except for the Super key shortcut. I find the Cairo Dock quite versatile but the docs don't become clear unless one gets immersed in it first. For example the dock has several sections with different behaviors but there's NO visual cue of it. The right side (taskbar) is for the currently loaded apps, while the left side is for launchers. The icons look the same but the behavior is quite different. Clicking an icon in the taskbar section toggles between minimize and normal, while the left section launches a new instance of the app. I had to remove the default icon on the right for Tips and Tricks, because it kept freezing the entire Cairo Dock when clicking it. Also it's no longer in active development as of 2014.

Again I need to further investigate the Plank dock. Reminds me of pirates walking off the plank or the Max Planck Institute in Germany...

And then that separation your talking about - I like that, and build on the left my icons I want for launchers, and then use the right to show other running apps. Once it is all customized, its pretty cool.

Okay the site at https://glx-dock.org/ doesn't have any 2022 dates that I can see. But on GitHub at https://github.com/Cairo-Dock it shows cairo-dock-core last updated on 1/23/2022.

I have a specialty niche app that's user compiled. It fact it's meant for Arduino and the Linux desktop is a secondary afterthought. You will NOT find it in MXPI or Synaptic. It does NOT show up on Cairo Dock whatsoever. It has an icon in the .desktop file but does show on icon in the XFCE panel as a blank white icon. Again it does NOT show up on Cairo Dock at all, but does show on the XFCE panel as a blank icon. Running xprop WM_CLASS in terminal returns NO value. I'd sure like to find out why Cario Dock doesn't see it. Otherwise I could possibly make Cairo Dock my primary dock.

I remember seeing some place that there is a list that you can load to have cairo look for apps. I do it a little different, I have a folder with all of my 'Dockies' in it. In this folder I have shortcuts to all of the apps I want loaded (there arent many), along with icons that I want on those apps. (A few are specific ).

In that folder I have three custom apps that I run alot, apps I wrote and use. When I setup a new machine, I copy over that folder, then remove pretty much everything I dont want in cario, and then drag / drop those apps onto my cairo dock.

The only other thing I do is to setup two sets of 'Folders' drops - one to Clients and one to Data. The Cairo 'Folders' add on provides breakouts, so you hover over the icon and you can choose anything in it to click on - Awesome feature!
