Laptop only has display booting with systemd

For issues with MX that has been modified from the initial install. Example: adding packages that then cause issues.

Laptop only has display booting with systemd

#1 Post by oldandtired »

Hello,

Bit of an odd one here. I recently installed MX23 on my laptop (Latitude 7390) and it worked very well for a few days. Then it started losing the display after the "Waiting for /dev/ to be fully populated" boot message.

For some reason it still boots fine, display and all, under systemd, but I'd prefer to be using sysv.

I've tried:
  • typing my login "blind" in case there is a display but it's just gone dark for reasons unknown -- no joy but I can't see if there's an error message
  • connecting via ssh -- this works after I allowed ssh access :)
  • connecting via vnc and rustdesk -- nothing. No joy trying to connect under sysv though it works as usual under systemd.
  • checking my boot options in the laptop bios -- nothing odd-looking that I can see.
  • looking at the Xorg.0.log, dmesg output etc -- nothing that stands out to me, but then I'm not a great troubleshooter...
  • booting under systemd, changing the desktop environment back to xfce, rebooting under sysv -- no luck
I'd be grateful for some pointers on how to diagnose and fix this!

The quick system info below comes from a session booted using systemd. Further down there's a (shorter?) version that I copied from an ssh session when booted under sysv with a blank screen...

Not at all. It's the xfce official release but with cinnamon installed via apt. Hardly a respin. As I also mentioned I reverted to xfce and that didn't help either. Unsurprisingly as the issue appears to occur even before lightdm gets started.

Yeah, understood. However I'm concerned that it pre-emptively puts the blame on cinnamon being installed -- it worked with both cinnamon and xfce before the display started blanking under sysv.

Can you get to a terminal interface with <Ctl><Alt><F2> and then try "startx" to see what happens?

If switching to a TTY doesn't pan out, I think you can boot directly to a terminal by adding "init 3" to the GRUB command line by editing it directly in GRUB.
MXPI = MX Package Installer
QSI = Quick System Info from menu
The MX Test repository is mostly backports; not the same as Debian testing

Hi, that's a good idea but I should have mentioned that I tried that and it didn't work. I'll give the 'init 3' suggestion a try. Thanks.
