Single click is just so much more relaxing. None of that agitated muscle tension. Since becoming enlightened I now always change my Windows installs to single click.

I wonder if double clickers change hyperlinks to double click.

Hyperlinks on the desktop or in the browser? I think the point of double-click is that on Desktop or file explorer (Thunar, Dolphin, etc) you can select a file with a single click and then do an action (move, copy, delete, etc) while if you are a single-clicker you need to pay attention how you select the file, it's more important when selecting multiple files. But it depends on what tools you use, as asqwerth menioned, Dolphin has nice + and - option on the icon that lets you select/deselect the file.

Double-click came from Windows. An impractical, unnecessary click style and difficult for many to learn in the beginning.

Not quite:
Double-clicking allows two different actions to be associated with the same mouse button. It was developed by Bill Atkinson of Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) for their Lisa project. Often, single-clicking selects (or highlights) an object, while a double-click executes the function associated with that object.

As for double-click, it is a tradition of Windows, GNOME, Xfce and many more. I think double-click has good merits to avoid mis-operation by users. For example, it could avoid to delete a file or to run an unwanted application by mistake.
Right, a lot of people like the double-click, it is more secure (especially into the file browser), and especially for beginners and olds users. (it is the first priority, advanced users can customize stuffs by themself)

So evenly divided! So no clicks. Activate by telepathy. Stare at the object and boom it opens.
