Cannot install linux kernel 6.4 ahs in MX23  [Solved]

#1 Post by kondor2003 »

Hello everybody,

I am facing an issue that is a bit over my level of understanding: I am trying to install linux kernel 6.4 ahs but it won't install and will give an error. Let me explain.
I have upgraded from MX21.3 to MX23, 64bit, using the guide from here : https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/upgradi ... nstalling/ without any issues and I could boot into my KDE environment successfully with kernel 6.1. So I wanted to install the 6.4 ahs kernel but when it is building it I get the following error message:

Code: Select all

checking whether inode_owner_or_capable() takes user_ns... configure: error:
*** None of the expected "capability" interfaces were detected.
*** This may be because your kernel version is newer than what is
*** supported, or you are using a patched custom kernel with
	*** incompatible modifications.
	***
	*** ZFS Version: zfs-2.1.11-1
	*** Compatible Kernels: 3.10 - 6.2
I have searched online and on the Debian Wiki and this is the latest release of the zfsutils package. Can't understand what "capability" interfaces it is expecting and could not find them.
Do i need to do a migration using the guide from here: https://mxlinux.org/migration/ instead, so that I do not run into this type of issues again? Or I need to do something else?
Thank you for your help!

There is a newer 2.1.12 in upstream Debian. I thought I had backported it for AHS, but apparently not. :bagoverhead:

Wait a bit, and I'll have the MX 23 packages built for ahs.

MX 23 updates to zfs 2.1.12 have been built and are heading to the AHS repo.

I'll see how involved it will be to rebuild those for 21 and 19 AHS tomorrow.

It's now in the primary test AHS repo, but might take some time to get to all the mirrors: https://repology.org/project/zfs/versions

Hello Stevo,

So I will wait a bit before updating the system and try again to install the linux kernel 6.4 ahs.
Thank you for solving the issue so fast!

Guys, I don't want to necesarilly start a new thread. I searched the help and the website without luck.
Does the newest MX 23 come with signed kernels from Debian? I assume yes, but better asking.
I use Google before asking dumb questions but I am new to Linux. Thank you for your patience :-)

Standard MX.uses the 6.1 signed Debian kernel.

The AHS kernels that I backport for MX end up unsigned. I wish I knew how they are signed by Debian.
