When installing screen goes black

#1 Post by whsergent »

I built a computer yesterday. Msi b650 am5 chipset, 7800x3d, integrated graphics, geforce 3070ti.

The first time i tried to boot from the usb drive and install i pressed enter at the splash screen for the kernel to load and went to a screen that said 2 video options were detected, they were numbered 1 and 2 and i was given a choice to select one. The keyboard was dead and would not accept input.

I booted to bios and changed the integrated graphics from auto to disabled, graphics are set to pcie graphics (PEG) which i left unchanged.

On rebooting i select the 23 kernel to load at the splash screen, got the screen that said alt F1 if i want to see the boot, and the screen went black, repeated this a second time just to make sure.

My theory is that the installer is trying to use integrated graphics, which is turned off and ignoring a perfectly good geforce 3070ti.

Please help, man does not live by windows alone. Thank you.

Anybody have any ideas at all?
I have tried passing the vcard detection on and vcard menu options to the kernel and the same thing happens.
Also tried with slackware and void, same thing.

Since this is a new build, I think I would suggest pulling the geforce and see if you can get MX loaded up on the integrated video first.

Maybe reset your bios to defaults and then change anything you want changed there too.
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

Agreed. I'd try to get it to boot via integrated graphics, install the OS and make sure everything else works correctly. Then put the GPU back in and try to get it to work.

I've read there are problems with kernel 6.1 and nvidia cards (would you know it, thanks again Nvidia). So maybe install a different kernel or go right for the ahs release?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Ok so i took the 3070ti out and tried integrated graphics, same thing. Tried disabling tpm (secure boot has been disabled all along, but im grasping at straws here) same thing with tpm disabled, black screen.

Along the way i noticed a grub kernel option that i didnt see before "noxorg" looking at the text output the failure threw the last line was something on the order of /dev looking for or enumerating devices and no further text after that.
Guess i will wait a couple of kernel versions or bios updates.

Does anyone else have mx23 running on an am5 platform with a 7800x3d and 6000 mhz ddr5? This platform is young and judging from what i read maybe not completely stable. I have had to do two bios flashes, the last a beta dated 08/04/23 to get the memory stable at high speeds.

Anyway, im not lost, i have a name server running mx 21 about 2 feet from my left knee :)

I will give it one last shot down clocking the ram, thanks for the attempted help.

EDIT: Downclocking the memory did not help. I give up.

You can post the "Quick System Info" from menu before installing, that will be the best.

Windows system info churns out half a megabyte of text, is it useful?

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. I just ended up installing slackware. The only graphical live type installation interface i could get to run was pop os and it was so slow it was impossible to get through the install.
Idk why all the graphical alternatives didnt work, something with the new hardware maybe. Anyway, i learned more about efi and grub than i wanted to and it will probably take a week to install steam with slackware multilib, but at least i have an alternative to windows even if it isnt mx linux.
