doodstecsonhere wrote: Wed Jul 26, 2023 2:17 am @fehlix will you please shortly explain your reasoning behind you vdb1, vdb2, and vdb3 partitions? I'm new to manually partitioning: trying to learn more on it. I usually just to a regular install but I'm at a "enthusiastically confused" stage for now. :)
On my KVM/Qemu VM install the partitions are named by the kernel like vdb1, vdb2...

/dev/vdb1 "BIOS_GRUB" : As I do prefere to boot/switch sometimes either within UEFI-boot mode or with classical MBR/BIOS-boot mode, this 1MB sized BIOS_GRUB partition on a GPT-partition table, would keep grub happy, when grub-install'ing
"onto" MBR with grub-install (--target=i386-pc ). The reason: A GPT-partition table do not have unused/free space between the first sector (the real MBR) and the start of the partition, which is needed by MBR-grub-install to place it's own grub core.img onto.

/dev/vdb2 "ESP": This is the ESP (EFI System partition) which grub-install is needing for creating EFI-grub-boot loader, necessary for UEFI-booting

/dev/vdb3 "BOOT": This is the not-encrypted ext4 boot partition, which will hold the boot files for allowing to boot further into the luks-encrypted system at /dev/vdb4
minstall-luks-btrfs-efi.jpg
Why 1MB for vdb1, why 512MB for vdb2, and why 1GB for vdb3?
Hi doodstecsonhere,
VDB1 is for Grub - small program used in first stages of boot - to run kernel and code from /boot (partition or folder)
If disk is partitioned with MBR scheme, it could be installed also in MBR zone of disk, if GPT, Grub can be installed in its dedicated partition or into EFI partition.

VDB2 - EFI partition - (relatively) new technology for storing code used for early stages of boot various operation systems - all in symbiose in one partition.
Windows 10 defaults to 100MB size, but if multiboot it is recommended bigger, for some spare space.

VDB3 - If you are using encryption, Grub currently cannot unlock LUKS2 containers, so for Grub to successfully access next boot code - kernel itself and rest of the Linux - these data must be on separate partition.
Here resides kernels, if you have installed more than one. Therefore at least 1GB.

Regards,
Andy

Thanks, @andy ! My understanding of partitions is getting better. This is helping. :)

New RC3 XFCE Feedback

So I resnapshot-ed with MX Snapshot, reinstalled: added a swap partition this time equal to ram size for hibernation ability. Timeshift snapshots confirmed working.

During the installation menus, I didn't click check on the creation of swap file: I only created the swap partition.

Should I have also clicked check on the swap file option after finishing with the partitions menu?
I asked the question because it doesn't seem like swap function is working for my system now. See screenshots for the output of "free -h".

See my full "installation to timeshift testing to swap troubleshooting" flow in the attached screenshots.

Another question: do I really need to create an ESP partition? How big is the recommended size?

FWIW, this was the post by @AK-47 of which I was thinking:
As to your question about a folder, this was done because we found with Btrfs it is best to use swap in its own subvolume, and since putting it in a folder doesn't do any harm, this is the approach that was adopted across the board.
By the way, I'm still using ext4 across the board, so have hardly any experience with btrfs (except in an occasional VM test box).

you don't need a swap file if you have a swap parttion.

you don't need an ESP unless you boot with UEFI (your system info says BIOS for booting).

the swap should be active. perhaps post your /etc/fstab. perhaps the swap did not get defined properly. it would be easy to add without reinstalling probably.

maybe checking

Code: Select all

sudo blkid
sudo cat /etc/fstab
would be good.

Re: 16 Things to do after installing MX
3. Fire up synaptic and load about 30 programs (adds to maybe 240 packages with all dependencies)
Such as audacity, k3b, ksnip, bleachbit, ripperx, handbrake, scid, stockfish, eboard, espeak....
I really should automate this with aptik !
Re # 3 above, I'd use Universal Package Installer first, then synaptic or MXPI.

Do you mean the MX tool User Installed Packages?
Yes, I have aids Lexy. :p

Thanks, @dolphin_oracle ! :)

Here's the output of sudo blkid:

Code: Select all

@DoodMann

fstab acutally looks correct.

**edit*** no, SWAP should be swap (lowercase) in the /etc/fstab. make that change and

Code: Select all

sudo swapon -a
and check free again.

@dolphin_oracle you tagged someone else. I LIKE that nickname tho hahaha hey @DoodMann :p

"sudo swapon -a" isn't outputting anything after the changes.

"/etc/fstab" content originally was:

Code: Select all

# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
UUID=678a6bb7-9229-4255-a889-85f46f09d149 / btrfs subvol=@,ssd,discard=async,noatime,compress=zstd:1 1 1
UUID=678a6bb7-9229-4255-a889-85f46f09d149 /home btrfs subvol=@home,ssd,discard=async,noatime,compress=zstd:1 1 2
UUID=cfc2fa51-87aa-440c-a067-2a465137ac15 SWAP SWAP discard 0 2
Changed it into:

Code: Select all

# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
UUID=678a6bb7-9229-4255-a889-85f46f09d149 / btrfs subvol=@,ssd,discard=async,noatime,compress=zstd:1 1 1
UUID=678a6bb7-9229-4255-a889-85f46f09d149 /home btrfs subvol=@home,ssd,discard=async,noatime,compress=zstd:1 1 2
UUID=cfc2fa51-87aa-440c-a067-2a465137ac15 swap swap discard 0 2
But let me try rebooting if it helps.

@doodstecsonhere A successful swapon -a won't output anything. But, feel free to add -v, i.e. swapon -av.

Also, "dmesg | grep swap" will show you activation of swap.
ADDED: use "dmesg -T | grep swap" to show you human readable date/time in the dmesg output.
