Of course the thread isn't solved. You didn't do anything to make it work.

I tried using the MX Package Installer for Wine-Staging. It installed OK but did not run. I found an article on the web and followed it to install Wine-Staging 7.17 and it runs OK on MX 19.4. Thanks to all!

I have one genealogy program that runs only on MS Windows or MacOS. I had trouble getting the program to work on Linux with Wine ( Win.exe program ). What I discovered is that the Wine software in the repositories are not the latest builds. What actually worked for me was to go to the Wine website and look for the latest software: https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian Follow the instructions listed there. I copy each command with mouse and paste into Konsole terminal. This will load all you need for Wine. When you want to install a MS Win program, download the .exe file to your Downloads folder. After it downloads the program, right click on the programs icon. A menu pops up. Select Properties. Click on Permissions Tab. Change all permissions to " Can View & Modify " Then check the box " Is Executable " Then Click on Okay. After you do that, Right click on the programs icon and select Open With Wine Windows Program Loader. This will load your Win programs. Depending on the Windows program, Wine might ask your permission to Install Mono and Wine Gecko. Click okay to install those if required. Some Windows programs use that. After a lot of frustration, this finally worked for me and the one Windows program loads without any problems and works great.

Quick Q: does program happen to be Roots Magic? If yes, which version? I'm asking since I tried to get this program to work under Wine some time ago, without success.

What I use is Ancestral Quest 16. There is a free version on their site. Just download the AQ16 for MS Windows and follow the info in previous post. I tried using it when I used the Wine app from the repository, but it never seemed to load properly. Ancestral Quest resembles PAF5 that used to be available. Looks and operates like PAF5 with a few nice cosmetic changes. I like it a lot. So far, no issues. Just remember to to download Wine from the URL I posted previously. I downloaded the Basic version. If you like, you can pay for the enhanced version, which has a few more features, but I don't use those extra features. Hope it works out for you.

Thank you!

The reason I asked is, my wife uses Roots Magic. Suppose to be best family tree program. She got used to this program and she is not touching anything else. (I tried to convince her, but we all know, how these things go he-he) And this program is the only reason she needs windows. I contacted them and no Linux version is planning. I tried Wine but with not much success. (although I'm noob in Linux and with Wine). So I was wondering if you maybe got it to work with Wine :)

I downloaded the free version ( 32 bit and 64 bit ) and installed it with Wine. It loaded and then froze up my system, both versions. Tried to get it to actually work, but no cigar. I checked the Wine website to see if Roots Magic was listed and if there were any bugs / problems or if they were working on it, but Roots Magic was not listed. Generally that means the developers / coders at Wine have not gotten to this program yet. I used to use PAF genealogy program, but that was closed down many years ago. The code base was taken over by other developers and a new program was started ( Ancestral Quest ). That one works perfectly fine on my system. Ancestral Quest also has a Mac OS version if you have Apple Mac.

If you want to try, your Linux distribution ( Mx Linux ) has a genealogy program called Gramps. It's in the software repository and has been around for awhile. I tried it a while back, but I didn't like the interface. Some people like it, but others don't. It all depends on easy the interface is and how it's arranged ( my opinion ). My money is on Ancestral Quest. That I know works. I know all too well about what the wife likes and wants all too well. Ha Ha Ha :) Try Ancestral Quest or try Gramps. Good luck.

Your last choice would be to buy a used laptop from Amazon that still has Windows 7 or 8 on it. I have a Lennovo Think Pad T500 that had Win 7 but I erased it from the HDD and installed Linux. They're not that expensive.

First thank you for all the work you put on yourself. I hope it was not too much of a trouble. I saw too late your post to stop you.

My wife, she can be stubborn, will not use anything else, than what she is being used to. So I have a feeling, even if I would be able to get Roots Magic to work under Linux, it is still a question if she would be willing to move to Linux since she is used to windows. But I asked just out of curiosity.

In the past I was trying to get Roots Magic to work under Linux, but no success.

I appreciate for all your help, thank you very much!
