DVD/CDROM writer issue

#1 Post by Asrael »

My PC is getting on in years. Recently the DVD writer developed an issue - wouldn't read commercial DVDs which it had formerly and wouldn't write to blank media. Except once in a while it would allow me to write out photos from my camera.
I replaced the DVD writer with a Hitachi. At first neither Windows or MX could access it. After a while and a switch of SATA cables, windows will write and play. However while MX will play the intro to a DVD e.g. LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring, it will not subsequently play the actual DVD film. This is not a problem in Windows 10. In Windows the DVD is shown in Device Manager. In MX, whilst the DVD is shown on the desktop, it doesn't appear in inxi -Fxxxrza.
I've always found MX to be head and shoulders above most Linux distros and better than Windows normally so I'm a bit disappointed at the current issue. Any pointers which I've missed would be appreciated.

Re: DVD/CDROM writer issue

#2 Post by mklym »

Did you set the new drive to the same settings as the old drive? I am talking about the shunt posts by the sata and power cable connectors. You use the shunt to designate how the unit is controlled by the computer. The usual choices are master, slave and cable-select. Needs to be the same on the new drive as on the old drive you are replacing, other wise you may have issues with the drive working properly, or at all.
Also, the optical drive does not show up in the QSI (inxi -Fxxxrza). At least mine never has that I am aware of. Here is my desktop with a DVD full of pictures I am accessing as I run QSI:

If the device appears on Desktop, you can assume MX sees it. If you want confirmation, inxi -d will do it. So will lsblk -f and sudo lshw -C disk.
