What's the best thing to do when the whole post is a useless mistake?

Edit the post by strike out for instance, so it can still be seen, and state the mistake. Because people respond to it when they see it, and then having it gone devaluates their effort to help you. It is also bad form to remove the entire content.

Thanks, will do.

@Adrian Although I got MXPI to behave properly, using your old fix, I still ended up with a permanently frozen desktop. Can't figure that one out. I had to run a system restore several times so I could continue testing.

The guide to install protonvpn work well with MX21,instead with MX23 the part of "Linux system tray icon" of proton-vpn-gui doesn't work.( the guide ton install for debian seems the same ).

In the guide say to install this package "gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1" but this package does not exist.

It would be great to add "protonvpn" in mx-packageinstaller.

@4ps4all Seems that link is for previous versions of MX. Debian Bookworm doesn't have gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1 in it's repo.

Have you tried this method. https://protonvpn.com/support/official- ... pn-debian/

Code: Select all

Linux system tray icon

Please note that we don’t support the system tray icon on Debian 11
because the package gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1 has been depreciated
and is not present on Debian 11.
This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.

The Proton install guide you cite has been written some time ago. It refers to "MX Linux 19+" in the line under the title. It links to a Deb file dated 12-May-2023.

For MX Linux 23 the desktops were updated: Xfce was updated from 4.16 to 4.18 and KDE Plasma was updated from 5.20.5 to 5.27.5

Let us know what their Debian 12 (released June 2023) support plans are. It would be best that you, as a Proton account holder make a support inquiry. MX 19 was based on Debian 10 and MX 21 was based on Debian 11.

ALSO: knowing what that extra bit they ask to be installed (gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1) actually is as that would help in packaging it for MX 23 too. I checked and found:

Code: Select all

$ apt info gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1
Package: gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1
State: not a real package (virtual)
N: Can't select candidate version from package gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1 as it has no candidate
N: Can't select versions from package 'gir1.2-appindicator3-0.1' as it is purely virtual
N: No packages found

@Wallon It is puzzling because no-one else has reported such an issue.
Wallon wrote: Tue Jul 11, 2023 7:51 am ...I've tried several Live sticks. I always had the same problem, the icons on the desktop are not active....
Do you mean you made various live-usbs from the same "bad" iso or did you download the iso again and then make a live-usb from that?
Are the icons active if you boot the "bad" live-usb with English as system language? What about other languages?
Does a right click on inactive icons do anything? It should open an idesk menu.

...Here's the solution for my computers...
F7 Console = ask
Press " Enter
Choose 1920x1080x8 resolution or 1920x1080x16 resolution or 1920x1080x32 resolution.
All the icons on the desktop are active on all my Live USB sticks...
Maybe idesk has a problem with whatever is getting set with auto screen resolution selection on your system rather than the language selection?

gir1.2-appindicator is in both the main MX21 repo https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/li ... _amd64.deb (Maintainer: SwampRabbit) and the MX21 Test repo https://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/tes ... _amd64.deb (Maintainer: Steven Pusser). ProtonVPN therefore installs fine for me in MX21 with the system tray icon.

The absence of gir1.2-appindicator in Bullseye also affects quodlibet - https://github.com/quodlibet/quodlibet/issues/3842.

If one of the current maintainers in MX21 could do so for MX23 it would be very welcome.

Dear @Melber ,

In summary, the MX Fluxbox ISO image has always been good and I have always checked the SHA256 and MD5 signatures. I have never had a problem with the MX Fluxbox beta 2 - 64 bits ISO image. I downloaded the MX Fluxbox ISO image several times and the signatures were always good.

I have never had a problem with my USB keys. They are of good quality!

I always checked with "Arandr" if the resolution was good on my Live USB sticks. But that doesn't seem to be enough.

When I do "F7 Console" when I start up my Live USB sticks to choose the right resolution, I can right-click on the desktop icons. I get an English menu or a new help window.

I've installed Nvidia's proprietary driver because there's screen tearing with the "nouveau" driver. The installation went well.

For the moment, my MBR installation (Legacy) is working well in [fr_BE].

Kind regards,
Wallon
