Mullvad VPN new version update breaks the app

#1 Post by notfound »

I am on MX Linux 19.4, and just updated the VPN client to 2023.4. And now it is sitting at "connecting to Mullvad system service" when I open it.

https://i.ibb.co/0QtmxHM/mull.png

Nothing happens when I

Code: Select all

sudo service mullvad-daemon start
either.

Also this didn't work:

Code: Select all

$ sudo systemctl start mullvad-daemon
System has not been booted with systemd as init system (PID 1). Can't operate.
Failed to connect to bus: Host is down
Neither did this:

Code: Select all

$ sudo /opt/Mullvad\ VPN/resources/mullvad-daemon -v
sudo: /opt/Mullvad VPN/resources/mullvad-daemon: command not found
I've uninstalled, restarted, reinstalled, and restarted a number of times.

Ran

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge mullvad-vpn
after reinstall and reboot, and then attempted a fresh install. Same problem persists.

Cannot find a resolution. Seems like a bug. Version 2023.3 worked fine... as well as all previous other versions this year and last year. I found the 2023.3 version on Mullvad's Github and installed that after a purge and restart, and the same problem persists.

I can't figure this out.

Thank you. That reverted me back to 2023.3, and it works. However, this probably means that I need to update MX to the current version, which is 21 I believe, so that I can update Mullvad.

Mullvad version 2023.3 is still officially supported by Mullvad, even though it is not the most recent stable release. If you do not want to update to the latest MX update, it would not be an issue. That way you can wait until MX 23 is officially released if you want a new MX version. Mullvad normally announced on their blog post when they reture offical support for versions. You can also enter using CLI

Code: Select all

mullvad version
and it will return if the version you are using is still offically supported,

Maybe. OTOH, see this : https://mullvad.net/en/download/vpn/linux

If in the CLI you you use

Code: Select all

$ mullvad version
it returns

Code: Select all

Current version      : 2023.3
Is supported         : true
Suggested upgrade    : 2023.4
Latest stable version: 2023.4
Notice Mullvad 2023.3 is still officially supported. Also, mullvad officially still supports older versions for about a year. They announce via their blog when old versions are no longer officially supported. 2023.4 is the most recent version, but other versions are still officially supported.
