MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread

#1 Post by dolphin_oracle »

This thread is for feedback and issue reports MX-23 beta 2, any flavor.

Be sure to include the quick-system-info with your report.

If posting nvidia-installer (ddm-mx) issues, please post the contents of /var/log/ddm.log.
If posting remaster issues, please include the contents of /var/log/live/live-remaster.log
If posting installer issues, please include the contents of /var/log/minstall.log
If posting issues with MX-PackageInstaller “Popular Apps”, please post contents of /var/log/mxpi.log or /var/log/mxpi.log.old (whichever contains the log of your issue).

By the way, the gui for quick-system-info now has a pretty nice log viewer function.

if posting about an application, please be specific on what application.

Posting from the beta2 right now. Downloaded, md5 is good, burn to 4 GIg stick using MX live creator under the beta1, and boots fine.
Posting from here. I will check the sound, and then hit install to my testing partion, grub to root.

Sound card selected with the MX Tools- sound card selector, it works...hit install.

FYI, there's a typo in the blog link for download of the XFCE 64-bit iso. Says beta1 rather than beta2, generating an error at SourceForge. Can manually click through to the correct file name, but some users might not think to do that. By the way, you might add to Known Issues that the ISO won't at present boot from Ventoy, a problem hopefully to be fixed by future Ventoy update.

Edit: Ventoy has now been updated. The current version (1.0.93) boots the MX-23 beta2 without difficulty. Also still works with older versions (I tested 21.2.1, which was the ISO I had handy).

Congratulations to the MX Team for this BETA2. I have seen it at first available at Sourceforge, than the announcement on Distrowatch but still miss it when I read the News on https://mxlinux.org/mx-linux-blog/ . Just installed and now writing on it. I dont found a torrent for the Xfce4 or the others, right?

So far it runs good. First time a non Arch Distro detected my Arch based Distro Installations correct so that they should be ready to boot with their multiple entrys in the initrd line:

Code: Select all

initrd /boot/intel-ucode.img /boot/initramfs-linux.img
. But what it does not correct detected: my SWAP partition, so I now have only the swapfile which I created during installation, my other Linux installations like Garuda Linux(also Arch based)(maybe cause it is on BTRFS) and openSUSE (they seem to have their special BTRFS partition layout).

Does somebody knew why grub.cfg sometimes states root=UUID... and sometimes root=/dev/sdbXX? There are cases where my internal sda is not shown and then sdb becomes to sda and the boot stops in a dash shell.

Is btrfs fully supported on MX Linux 23?

Will it be okay for small machines like mine to use Firefox or better use Brave or what would you suggest?
I would like to offer torrent download of MX-23 Linux from my small system, have only to check which ports to open or so. Any suggestions?

You want it, so you get it:

Re: MX-23 beta 2 feedback thread

#6 Post by ceeslans »

downloaded MX-Fluxbox-amd64 iso and installed it to a usb3
first impression: this beta2 is smooth and fast running. desktop is setting quickly, no traces of delays from sleeping/delayed startup items. very responsive to mouseclicks and keybinds.

Here are some initial findings

xsession-errors
---------
~/xsession-errors file keeps showing a number of errors/warnings, mostly related to pipewire (rtkit, libcamera etc) as well as xfce4-clipman issues.

No fluxbox errors were recorded in xsession-errors, nor logged to ~/.fluxbox/log.
Fluxbox only shows (harmless) warning about not being able to open fluxbox.cat: [Warning: Failed to open file (fluxbox.cat). For translation, using default messages.]
If you see that message, you can resolve it by executing following commands:

Code: Select all

cd /usr/share/fluxbox/nls
sudo ln -is en_US.UTF-8 $(locale | grep LANG | cut -d= -f2)
Also showing continuous 'Helpers.IconFetcher-WARNING' messages, about missing paths to 'font.png' and 'background.svg' icons. To solve this, suggest to edit following *.desktop files in /usr/share/applications:

Code: Select all

- mxfb-font.desktop : Icon=org.gnome.fontmanager
- mxfb-backgrounds.desktop : Icon=preferences-desktop-wallpaper
Icons will then display correctly in rofi/appfinder --> and warning messages are gone.

mxfb-font
---------
gtk 'subpixel' value is not written/saved to ~/.gtk-2.0 and ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini.
apparently the "gtk-xft-rgba= " line is failing in both files.
after manually adding the line in both files, then the chosen value is correctly written.

more to follow as it comes along.

Quick (dumb?) Question about Installing:

I had previously installed Beta-1 on an old, legacy machine using Root, Home & Swap on 3 different partitions (with one "Logical" Partition). I want to wipe those partitions and re-install Beta-2.

However, since by default Beta-2 uses a Swapfile, can I install Beta-2 on just 1 partition on that old machine? With /Root/Home, and the Swapfile, on just 1 partition?

My question is: where does that Swapfile reside? I'm assuming it's NOT on a separate partition, right? Does it go in /Root/Home (automatically)?

I want to correctly set-up the partitions on that old (MBR) machine, and minimize the number of partitions (max=4). I know I can do as before, but I'd like to use the minimum number of partitions possible!

Can I get-away with installing Beta-2 on only 1 partition?
(And, I cannot do a "Whole Disk" install-- other stuff on that drive already)

gtk 'subpixel' value is not written/saved to ~/.gtk-2.0 and ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini.
apparently the "gtk-xft-rgba= " line is failing in both files.
after manually adding the line in both files, then the chosen value is correctly written.
The subpixel selection option was removed for exactly this reason.
Seems like the mxfb-accessories package is yet to be updated with the latest version of mxfb-font.
